Effects of Qigong Exercise Program on Smoking Cessation Self-Efficacy, Stress and EEG Concentration Indices of Adolescent Smokers

This study divided 28 adolescent smokers into experimental and control groups and examined the effects of Qigong exercise for improving smoking cessation self-efficacy, stress and concentration with them. For this, it conducted the 70-min program twice a week for 8 weeks and analyzed the effects of the program through pre- and post-test of smoking cessation self-efficacy, stress scale and brain wave concentration indices. As a result of co-variance analysis, smoking cessation self-efficacy was significant in pre-test scores and group and interaction effects. Pre-test scores and group effects were significant in the factors related to 'study and school' and 'friends' of six sub-factors of stress. Concentration was significant in pre-test scores and group effects in Low, Medium, and High levels, and interaction effects were also shown in Low and High levels. These results suggested that Qigong exercise program affected neurophysiological concentration by enhancing smoking impulse control of adolescent smokers and reducing stress.
