The influence of early disconnection and rejection schema on binge eating tendency : moderation effect of avoidance coping style

This study examined the moderation effect of avoidance coping style on the relation between early disconnection and rejection schema and binge eating tendency of female college students. The 378 participants were recruited from female college students in South Korea. They were answered questionnaires in which their early disconnection and rejection schema level, binge eating tendency, avoidance coping style level were measured. The correlational analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were employed to evaluate the hypothesized model. Results revealed that; first, Participant’s mean of age was 20.6 years old(SD=1.77), mean of height is 161.6cm(SD=4.79), mean of weight is 53.4kg(SD=6.76). 71.3% of participants was on a diet past. 30.3% of participants is on a diet. second, early disconnection and rejection schema significantly positively correlated with binge eating tendency and avoidance coping style. Lastly, hierarchical regression analysis were conducted to verify the moderation effect. The result confirmed that the avoidance coping style was a moderator on the relation between early disconnection and rejection schema and binge eating tendency of female college students. The implication of this result and suggestions for future study are discussed.
