The Relationship between Middle School Students' Perception of Parenting Attitudes and Self-Directed Learning Ability - The Mediating Effect of Emotional Intelligence -

This study aimed at verifying the mediating effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between middle school students' perception of parenting attitudes and their self- directed learning ability. First, the results from a correlation analysis on the students' perception of parenting attitudes, emotional intelligence and self-directed learning ability showed that all the variables were in a significant positive correlation. Second, in order to examined the effect of students' perception of parenting attitudes on their self-directed learning ability and emotional intelligence, a multiple regression analysis was conducted. Students‘ perception of parenting attitude turned out to have significant positive effects on their self- directed learning ability and emotional intelligence. Third, the mediating effect of emotional intelligence on the relationship between students' perception of parenting attitudes and their self-directed learning ability was verified. The results found that students' emotional intelligence partly had a significant mediating effect on the relationship between their perception of fathers' parenting attitudes and self-directed learning ability, and fully exerted a significant mediating effect on the relationship between their perception of mothers' parenting attitudes and self-directed learning ability.
