The Korean Protestant Church is now losing its impact on society more and more and in a crisis because Korean Christians and ministers are living unethical lives and involved in corruptions and scandals. This happens because many ministers of the Korean Church don’t have a proper understanding of ministry and spirituality. In this regard, Henri Nouwen is a good model for the Korean Church to reform itself and find a new direction. Henri Nouwen is an internationally renowned priest and author, respected professor, counselor, and beloved pastor. Although he passed away in 1996, he is regarded as a modern spiritual master and still making a great impact on Christians’lives all over the world regardless of their denominational backgrounds. He wrote over 40 books on the spiritual life. He leads us to a new understanding of ministry and spirituality in today’s context. First, Henri Nouwen understands ministry as a service that is practiced concretely in the midst of the world as Jesus did. He refers to Seward Hiltner’s three concepts of ministry-healing, sustaining, and guiding-and applied them to his own understanding of ministry. According to him, ministry means the works that are healing, sustaining, and guiding people in a right and appropriate way, following the way of Jesus. Ministers are those who are reminders of Jesus’ministry of healing, sustaining, and guiding. Therefore, genuine ministry comes true when ministers as humble servants of God play the roles of healing, and sustaining, and guiding in the world as Jesus already gave us a living example. Second, prayer is an important element in improving Christians’ faith and spirituality. Silence is a step Christians should go through before offering true prayers to God. Silence is a theme of spirituality. Silence is also the place where a true prayer is offered. Thus, Henri Nouwen is speaking about ‘spirituality of silence.’ According to him, silence is one of important spiritual disciplines. Power and product of word come out of silence. Further, he insists that true prayer comes from heart, not from intellect. Many Christians’s prayer lives are in crisis because they are filled with concepts and thoughts about God whereas their hearts are far away from God. Therefore, Henri Nouwen encourages us to learn from the prayer of Heart taught by the desert fathers in the time of early Christianity. The desert fathers practiced solitude and silence to submit a true prayer of heart to God. In conclusion, Henri Nouwen states that a way of mysticism, i.e., a way of silence and the prayer of heart, doesn’t stay on the individual’s spiritual dimension. Rather, he insists that it should be expanded to the socio-political dimension of society and the realization of the kingdom of God on earth.

현재 한국 교회는 사회나 공동체와는 무관한 채 여전히 기복적이고 무속적이며 피 안적인 신앙만을 가르치고 있다고 많은 사람들이 진단한다. 특히 목회자들과 교인들 의 윤리성 하락으로 인한 한국 교회는 사회적 영향력을 상실하고 있으며 더 이상 변 화와 성장의 모습을 보여주지 못하고 있다. 이것은 한국 교회 목회자들의 참다운 목 회와 영성에 대한 이해가 부족하거나 결여되었기 때문이다. 이런 시점에 헨리 나웬은 우리에게 좋은 참고가 된다. 그는 초대 그리스도교의 사막의 교부들의 신비주의 영 성에 깊이 영향을 받았고, 교파를 초월하여 사회 전반에서 다양하게 활동했던 인물이 다. 그는 평생 한 곳에 안주하기를 거부하고, 참된 그리스도의 삶을 추구하며 구도자 로서 삶을 살았다. 그는 예수 그리스도의 사역에로 부름을 받은 사제요, 신학자요, 상 담자요, 영성가요, 활동가로서 우리에게 본을 보여주었다. 무엇보다도 그는 이 시대에 목회의 의미와 영성의 본질이 무엇인지를 새롭게 깨닫게 해준다. 먼저, 헨리 나웬은 세상 속에서 구체적으로 섬김을 실현하는 것을 목회로 본다. 그 는 신학자 스워드 힐트너(Seward Hiltner)가 언급한 ‘치유하다,’ ‘붙들다,’ ‘인도하다’라 는 단어를 목회에 적용한다. 즉 목회란 바로 예수를 매개로 하여 사람들을 치유하고, 붙들어 주며, 제대로 인도하는 것을 뜻한다. 바로 예수야말로 이런 목회의 중심이며 주제이다. 그리고 목회자는 ‘예수님의 치유와 붙드심과 인도하심을 생각하게 만드는 자’라고 정의한다. 그러므로 예수님께서 본을 보이신 것처럼, 세상 속에서 구체적으로 섬김을 실현할 때, 사람들을 치유하고 삶을 잘 지탱하게 하고, 의미 있고 바른 진리의 길로 인도하는 역할을 제대로 수행할 때 하나님의 빛을 비추는 바른 목회가 이루어진 다는 것이다. 둘째로, 기도는 그리스도인의 신앙과 영성을 증진시키는 데 가장 중요한 항목이다. 그런데 침묵은 참된 기도를 드리기 위해 거쳐야 할 전 단계이다. 침묵은 참된 기도가 드려지는 자리이다. 바로 침묵은 영성의 한 주제이다. 그러므로 헨리 나웬은 ‘침묵의 영성’을 주장한다. 오늘날 말의 홍수 속에서 말의 참된 기능을 회복하기 위해 나웬은 무엇보다도 침묵의 중요성을 강조한다. 나웬에 의하면, 침묵은 영적 생활의 중요한 수 련들(규율들) 가운데 하나이다. 침묵을 통해 참된 말의 힘과 결실을 얻게 한다. 더 나 아가, 나웬은 참된 기도는 지성이 아니라 마음으로부터 나온다고 말한다. 기도생활의 위기는 우리의 지성이 하나님에 대한 관념으로 가득 차 있는 반면, 마음은 하나님으 로부터 멀어져 있다는 데 있다. 그러므로 나웬은 사막의 교부들이 가르쳤던 마음의 기도로부터 배울 것을 권고한다. 무엇보다 사막의 교부들은 이 마음의 기도를 드리기 위해 사막 가운데서 고독과 침묵을 실천했는데, 이것들은 끊임없이 기도하라는 기도 에의 소명과 분리될 수 없다는 것이다. 결론적으로, 헨리 나웬은 침묵과 마음의 기도로 대표되는 신비주의 영성의 길이 개 인의 내면적인 차원에만 머물지 말고 사회 속에서의 실천과 연결되어야 한다고 주장 한다. 침묵과 마음의 기도로 개인의 전존재가 하나님과 하나 되어 새롭게 변화되어야 할 뿐 아니라, 더 나아가 인간 사회, 정치, 경제 전 분야로까지 실천의 문제로 확대되 어야 한다는 것이다.
