The pastoral counseling is an theological discipline which is concerned about the Christianity from the perspective of healing and caring. So, it not only seeks for the healing of the Christian patients but also the transformation of the Christian culture. In this view, one of its urgent task in the Korean context is to suggest alternatives to the monolithic idea of the ideal Christian identity. Korean Christians tends to regard the Christian conversion as the only and the most important identity of Christians. They often set up the rigid boundaries of Christians and Christian cultures from non-Christians and non-Christian cultures. This paper intended to resolve the dilemma through the study of the works of Donald Capps. Using Erik Erikson's theory, Donald Capps makes an attempt to see the Christian life as the pilgrimage. Capps suggests the Beatitude, the main figures of the Bible, and the first eight books of the Bible, as having developmental schemes. Christians as the pilgrims should pursue various virtues according to their spiritual developmental stages. This theory implies the multiple but equally important Christian identities.

현대 목회상담학의 주요한 관심은 목회상담학이 단순히 개인치유에만 관심할 것이 아니라 사회, 문화, 종교, 제도의 공적 치유에도 관심해야한다는 것이다. 한 개인의 치 유는 그 자신의 내적 역동이나 가족문제때문만이 아니라 개인과 가족을 구성하는 사 회, 문화, 종교의 영향력 안에 있기 때문인 것이다. 그런데 현대 한국기독교문화치유에 있어 가장 관심해야 할 것은 타문화, 타종교에 대해 지나치게 배타적인 태도이다. 한국 기독교는 다양한 종교배경을 가지고 있는 상 황임에도 불구하고 한국의 이웃종교들에 대해 지나치게 배타적이고 호전적인 방식으 로 선교하고 있다. 그리고 그 중심에 구약성서의 우상숭배금지, 혹은 여리고성 땅 밟 기 등의 이미지와 메타포가 사용되고 있다. 본 논문은 위의 문제에 대한 관심 속에서 도날드 캡스의 이론을 중심으로 구약성 서의 처음 여덟 권에 대한 새로운 이해를 시도했다. 먼저, 목회상담학이 공적 문화변 혁에 관심해야 하는지 공공신학으로서 목회상담학연구의 필요성을 논한 후 캡스 이론 의 배경이 되는 에릭슨의 생애주기이론을 논했다. 그리고 캡스가 에릭슨의 이론을 어 떻게 활용하여 기독교 자원을 이해했는지 살펴본 후 캡스가 이해한 구약성서 첫 여덟 권에 대한 해석을 논한 후 캡스 논의의 의의와 한계를 평가했다. 본 논문은 캡스의 구약성서에 대한 논의를 한국 기독교 문화치유의 자원으로 해석하는데 그 의의가 있다.
