The study is intended to uncover one of the central problems of contemporary preaching situations, which the contemporary homiletic theories and practices face but fail to grasp; it analytically examines how serious the problem is, from where it originates, and to what direction it should be solved. Contemporary preaching has more interest in and better understanding of the sermon audience than any era’s in the history of preaching, but neglects the homiletic-theological problematics that the audience struggles with. It considers the audience no more than as an object of effective communication or at most as a hermeneutic subject. The contemporary sermon audience suffers frustration and confusion because they are not given a hermeneutic framework concerning how to connect preaching with the Word of God. The problematics is at the same time theological and practical. For the sermon audience does not raise and understand theological questions or accept their answers in a purely abstract manner. The sermon audience is a special one who wrestles with theological problematics, but it understands them in terms of practical participation and experiences. So the sermon audience’s problematics and confusion are such a serious one that they can make fundamentally and practically impossible the event of God’s Word intended by preaching. Such problematics and confusion of the sermon audience arise between the influences of contemporary thought trends, which induce the audience to doubt a transcendental reality, on the one hand, and the church’s tradition affirming this, on the other. They also come from the failure of constituting the proper conditions, in which the audience practically participate in and experience that reality. The contemporary preaching’s failure lies in that it ignores its connection with worship and liturgy as its proper external context. To solve the frustration and confusion of the contemporary sermon audience is possible by restoring sermon’s original locus and role in its proper external context, in other words, by restoring its nature as a worship language. The article analytically deals with the role and limit of sermon language as a liturgical language in view of contemporary thoughts and the church’s tradition.
