'The dilemma of symbol' in Eucharist can be properly handled by understanding the experience of eating and drinking in a deeper sense. Without this anthropological understanding, the experience of Eucharist stays in abstract level. It neither can transform subjective experience of the individual participants, nor can lead to a sympathy. Eating and drinking should be approached anthropologically to clear up the dilemma of symbol, through which the horizon of Eucharistic experience and understanding will widen. The participants must be trained to read the symbols to fully appreciate Eucharist. They also have to be able to find an analogy between their touching experience of daily meals and that of Eucharist. Through this analogy they lead the subjective experience to meet Christ's "presence of absence," in Eucharist. The understanding of Eucharist tends to be unduly subjective when too much emphasis is put on individual experience, for the purpose of handling the dilemma of symbol. Tradition and theology of congregation have to guard Eucharistic understanding against undue dependence on subjective experience of individual participants.

성찬이 겪고 있는 ‘상징의 딜레마’를 해결하기 위해 무엇보다 필요한 작업은 먹고 마시는 행위의 경험적 차원을 깊이 이해하는 것이다. 그것의 깊은 인간학적 차원의 이해를 동반하지 않고서는 성찬의 경험이란 한낱 추상적인 차원에 머물고, 참여자의 주관적인 경험을 매개하지 못할 뿐만 아니라, 아무런 공감을 형성하지 못할 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 상징의 딜레마를 해결하는데 있어서 먹고 마심에 관한 인간학적 이 해는 필수적이다. 이러한 인간학적 이해는 성찬에 대한 이해와 그 경험의 지평을 확 대해 줄 것이다. 또한 성찬의 감동을 누리기 위해서는 상징을 읽어낼 수 있는 성사 (聖事)적 안목을 키워야한다. 나아가 일상적인 식사의 감동적인 경험을 성찬을 경험하 는 해석의 틀로 유비시켜야한다. 이러한 과정을 통해 성찬에서 그리스도의 ‘부재의 현 존’과 접촉하는 주관적 경험에 도달할 수 있다. 그러나 상징의 딜레마를 해결하기 위 하여 개인의 주관적인 경험이 과도하게 강조될 경우, 성찬에 대한 해석이 지나치게 주관적이 될 가능성을 배제할 수 없다. 이런 오류를 범하지 않기 위해선 신앙공동체 의 전승과 신학이, 성찬에 대한 이해와 해석 작업이 예배자의 주관적 경험에만 의존 하지 않도록, 긴장을 불어넣어야한다.
