This article tries to be a traditional questing of Baptism in various aspect in terms of practice, theological meaning, space, and traditions in the early Christian church. Especially it helps to understand overview of early baptismal practice through examining change and development of Christian baptisteries and baptismal fonts. Development of architecture of baptisteries demonstrate that the early Christian church carried out a thoughtful, in-depth, and on-going conversation with the socio-cultural elements surrounding the church. The various types of baptisteries and fonts must be the outcome of the dialogue between Christianity and cultures. Early Christianity is to accept cultural diversity and incarnate into the cultural form without losing the core theological understanding throughout Christian history. This incarnation is also an on-going dialogue between Christianity and culture. The study of the evolution of baptisteries clearly demonstrates how the theology of a given time and place has been translated into baptismal spaces. In the course of understanding early baptismal space, we will reach to the timely question of "How ought we build our church today?"

이 논문은 초대교회의 세례에 대한 전형적인 탐구를 시도하고 있다. 이 논문에는 모든 것을 포함하고 있지만 않지만 초대교회 세례의 실행, 신학적인 의미, 공간, 그리 고 전통에 대한 글들을 담고 있다. 다만 이러한 주제들은 세례터 혹은 세례반이라는 주제를 중심으로 그리고 그 주제들을 통해 해석되고 설명되어지고 있다. 특히 세례터 와 세례반의 변화와 발전은 초대교회 세례를 이해하는 좋은 방법 중의 하나이다. 세 례 공간에 대한 건축적인 발전을 살펴보는 것은 초대기독교회가 놓여있는 상황 속에 서 사회-문화적인 요소들과 끊임없이 그리고 깊게 대화해 왔다는 것을 보여주는 하나 의 계기가 된다. 다양한 형태의 세례터와 세례반은 기독교와 그 당시 사회가 가지고 있는 문화와의 깊은 대화의 소산물임에 분명하다. 초기 기독교는 문화적인 다양성을 수용하였고, 기독교 역사를 통해 나타나는 신학 이해의 핵심적인 요소들을 왜곡하거 나 일어버리지 않고 문화 속에 들어왔다(incarnate). 문화의의 이러한 성육신도 기독 교와 문화의 계속된 대화의 결과이다. 세례터와 세례반의 변화(진화)에 대한 연구는 어떻게 시간과 공간의 신학이 세례의 공간으로 해석되고 표현되는지를 보여준다. 그 리고 이러한 초대 세례 공간의 이해의 과정을 통해, 우리는 우리에게 주어진 적절한 질문, 즉 ‘어떻게 우리가 오늘날 우리의 교회를 세워갈 것인가?’라는 질문을 만나게 될 것이다.
