This study is for surveying the views of life and death(死生觀) of ancient Korean found in Samguksagi(三國史記). The results are as follows. Firstly, the word of death and life(死生) was used more often than the word of life and death(生死) in Samguksagi. Secondly, the views of life and death of ancient Korean were created under the influence of religions, such as Shamanism and Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism. Thirdly, according to the Samguksagi, they did not distinguish between the hon(魂) and beak(魄) in expressing the soul of ancient Korean. The terms like yeong(靈), hon(魂), gui(鬼) and sin(神), representing the spirit nowadays were used as different meaning. Fourthly, The ancient Koreans’ various viewpoints of soul can be confirmed in Samguksagi. But there is no record to show the view of afterlife in ancient times. Therefore, it is impossible to confirm the afterlife view of Buddhism, such as Land of Happiness or Western Pure Land. It seems that the view of life and death of ancient Korean was effected by the Confucianism requesting secular loyalty and filial piety. Fifthly, the various religious ideas influenced the views of life and death of the ancient Korean. The hierarchical and regional factors also affected the view of life and death. The death of ancient Korean, appeared in Samguksagi, was controlled and forced by the kingdom and the ruling group under the Confucianism. It is believed that the control and forcing was possible, because the period of Samguk was a time of fighting with each other. War was everyday affair among the three countries until unifying the ancient kingdoms.
