The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, thoroughly translated into Korean in 1993 by the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics, contains so many names and toponym of Japan. The translation of The Annals are very useful in academic use. But the original texts and translations can not be free from errors, resulted from the lack of information about names and toponym of Japan. In this paper, the mistakes of The Annals will be surveyed from the cause analysis view. The editors of The Annals did not know exactly the complex structure of Japanese name, consisted of uji(本姓), myoji(苗字), the title of office(武家官 位), alias(通稱) and real name(本名). As the result, The Annals has a few mistakes in original texts. In other hand, the editors were inclined to express the sound of Japanese names and toponym with Chinese character, and the phonetic of Japanese language was considered in expressing with Chinese character. It makes the expression ways so various that it is difficult to identify a certain person. During the interpretation of The Annals into Korean, The information shortage about the names of Japan was also mattered. Several mistakes, especially in names and toponym, are found. To solve the misinterpretation in The Annals, it is necessary to make note on the names of Japan. To compile a biographical dictionary can be an alternative.
