The Seoul metropolitan area(SMA) has led the economic growth of korea byconcentrating most of national functions and industries. but, urban sprawl was ongoing in the SMA. 본 연구에서는 수도권의 도시성장 관리에 있어서의 미국의 스마트 성장(Smart Growth)정책의 도입적용 가능성을 살피고, 구체적인 정책의 체계적 적용 방향을 제시해 보고자하였다. 우선, 스마트 성장의 개념과 원칙에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 미국의 스마트성장 도시정책 사례를 종합하여 10가지 원칙에 따라 분류하였으며, 정책의 도입과 관련 우리 수도권의 정책적용 환경을 고찰하여 수도권의 당면 문제점에 대한 세부적 정책의 적용 가능성을 살피고 나아가 체계적 적용을 위한 정책 우선순위를 분석하였다. 정책의 상대적 중요도 조사 결과, 오픈스페이스 및 환경지역의 보전과 고밀압축적인건축설계 측면에서의 정책에 대한 전략적 도입이 높게 나타난 것으로 보아 아직까지는무분별한 도시팽창을 억제하는 정책이 우선시 되어야 한다는 것을 의미한다 할 것이다. 본 연구의 의의는 수도권 문제해소 측면에서 전문가 집단조사를 통해 미국의 스마트성장 정책과 수도권 성장 관리에 있어서의 효과성을 살피고 도입가능 정책의 체계적 접근을 시도하였다는 것이다. 하지만 미국과 우리나라의 정책 적용 환경이 다소 차이가 있어 이를 감안하기 어려운 점이 연구의 한계이다. 따라서 향후에는 보다 실천적인 연구를통해 정책의 실제적 적용효과에 대한 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다.
