Burnout among police officers is a well-documented phenomenon, with policeexhibiting significantly higher rates than other occupations. Demands for emotionalpresentation on police officers play a key role to produce burnout. This studyexamines impacts of police offices' emotional labor on burnout. The study usesindicators adapted from Morris and Feldman(1996) to assess the level of emotionallabor: the frequency of emotional demand, the general demands for expression andsuppression of emotion, the variety of emotional expression, and the emotivedissonance. To measure burnout, the study employs Maslach and Jackson(1981)'Maslach Burnout Inventory(MBI): emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personalaccomplishment. Using data collected from a survey of police officers in Daegumetropolitan city and Gyeongbuk province(N = 232), the study investigates the impactof emotional labor on burnout through ordinary least squares(OLS) regressions. Theresults show that the general demands for expression and suppression of emotion andthe emotive dissonance have statistically significant effects(p<.01) and the variety ofemotional expression has a statistically significant effect(p<.1) on burnout but not thefrequency of emotional demand.

본 연구는 경찰관의 감정노동이 소진에 어떠한 영향을 미치는 지를 실증적으로 검증하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경찰관의 감정노동 구성요인으로는 감정표현 빈도, 감정표현 주의정도, 감정표현 다양성, 감정적 부조화를 그리고 소진의 구성요인으로는 정서적고갈, 비인격화, 개인 성취감 결여를 선정하였다. 경찰공무원을 대상으로 감정노동이 소진에 미치는 영향을 확인한 결과, 감정노동의 구성요인 중에서 감정표현 주의정도와 감정적 부조화는 유의수준 0.01에서 그리고 감정표현 다양성은 유의수준 0.1에서 각각 소진에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난 반면에 감정표현 빈도는 소진에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 파악되었다. 이런 분석결과를 토대로, 본 연구에서는 경찰관의 감정관리를 위한 방안으로 감정노동 예방 및 치유 프로그램 개발·적용의 필요성, 근무환경 개선, 상급자의 하급자 감정노동 관리를 위한 멘토로서의 역할 필요성 등을 제안하였다.
