Unité d’Habitation de Marseille had been the target of researches for Le Corbusier for 50 years from 1907. Since 1945, it has been the core for all kinds of collective housing. In this study, the focus will be made on the process for over 30 years during the period in which Le Corbusier gives the meaning to the types of the collective housings. The objectives of this study are to find out what are the main components of UHM and when, and how they are formed. The analysis shows that except the new engineering methods, almost all parts of UHM have started to be formed at I-V through theories and real experiments made for a long period of time. In conclusion, in interpretation of UHM, two new viewpoints are suggested. Also, the value of comparison is provided to our study on the high rise urban collective housing. In addition, by newly understanding UHM, we would give a new perspective on the goals and orientations of a urban collective housing which Le Corbusier wanted to suggest.

오늘 날 마르세이유 유니테 다비따시옹(이하, UHM)은 흔히 최초의 고층 아파트 유형으로 거론된다. 르 꼬르뷔제에게 UHM는 1907년부터 50년까지 지속된 연구 대상이었으며 45년 이후 그의 모든 집합주거형식 제안의 핵심이었다. 본 연구에서는 LC가 집합주거유형 완성의 의미를 부여하는 UHM에 도달하기까지 30여년의 과정에 주목한다. UHM의 주요 주거구성요소들은 무엇이며 이들은 구체적으로 언제, 어떤 과정을 거쳐 형성되었는가를 밝히는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 분석 결과, UHM는 각종 신공법적 측면을 제외하면 거의 모든 부분이 I-V에서 구체화되기 시작하여 오랜 동안 이론과 실제의 실험을 통해 형성된 결정체라는 것을 확인했다. 결론적으로, UHM를 해석함에 있어서 2가지 새로운 관점을 제시하였고 이를 통해 UHM을 새롭게 이해함으로써 LC가 제시한 도시 집합주거의 목적과 방향을 재조명할 수 있다. 또한 우리의 고층 도시집합주거 연구에 비교의 가치를 제공하는 데 궁극적 의미가 있다.
