The purpose of this paper is to inquire into the birth of bioethics and its historical development. V.R. Potter coins the term 'bioethics' in his article, "Bioethics, the Science of Survival", 1970. He used it as a new discipline bridging science and humanities. But he did not develop it systematically. It is A. Hellegers that develops systematically it. And D. Callahan has established bioethics firmly as a discipline. In the course of development of bioethics, Potter’s view did not have a great influence on the world. Instead, Hellegers has taken lead the world of bioethics. So bioethics is degraded to the biomedical ethics that deals with new ethical problems implied in the development of medicine and life science. However, for the survival of human beings, we need the global bioethics that bridges science and humanities. It is the ideal of bioethics that V.R. Potter proposed in his first use of 'bioethics'.

이 글은 생명윤리학의 탄생을 역사적으로 개괄하여 그 원래적 의미가 무엇인지 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 이 글은 생명윤리학을 탄생시킨 몇 가지 사건에 주목하면서, 특히 ‘bioethics’라는 신조어가 어떻게 만들어져, 어떤 과정을 거쳐 하나의 학문으로 자리 잡게 되었는지, 그 역사적 전개 과정을 천착하고자 한다. 이런 논의를 통해 필자는 생명윤리학의 창시자는 포터이며, 이를 학문적으로 체계화시킨 자는 헬러거즈이며, 하나의 학문 분야로 정착시킨 자는 칼라한임을 드러내고자 한다. 생명윤리학의 이러한 정착과정에서 ‘bioethics’라는 신조어를 창조한 포터의 입장이 밀려나고 <케네디윤리학 연구소>의 헬러거즈의 입장이 득세하게 된 배경을 밝히면서, 필자는 포터의 입장, 즉 전지구적 생명윤리학의 회복을 역설하고자 한다. 그러니까 의학 및 생명과학의 발달로 일어나는 윤리적 물음을 다루는 좁은 의미의 생명의료윤리학을 넘어, 인류의 생존을 위해 과학과 인문학의 다리를 놓는 광의의 생명윤리학의 회복이 절실히 필요하다.
