The purpose of this paper is to research under the interest in intellectual history how Juche ideology has undergone trials in the historical process of North Korean socialism, what ideological features it revealed in that process, rather than to focus on theoretical contents of Juche ideology. First, after researching theoretical phase shift of Juche ideology in historical context, I analyzed the cause of the phase shift in three aspects. Juche ideology has been changed in terms of the theoretical phase and emphasis of contents, because of the need for power to respond internal -external environmental change. On a large scale, for the cause of the phase shift, requirement for establishment of the unique ideology system, North Korean leader's awareness about the advent of a new era, and North Korean leader's pride on a unique line of socialist construction enabling the economic growth of more than 20 years after the war, can be exemplified. Secondly, I analyzed the ideological features shown in the historical change process of Juche ideology. North Korean leader's strong post-colonial aspirations was the power made to replace the Marx -Leninism with Juche ideology, and the Confucian tradition contained in it was the 'invention of tradition' which was utilized selectively to establish the political leadership and promote the socialist industrialization. Further, Juche ideology, in its historical development process, has developed into the religious dimension that was deeply internalized in the lives of North Koreans, beyond ruling ideology.

이 글은 주체사상의 이론적 내용에 주목하기보다, 지성사적 관심 아래 북한사회주의 역사적 과정에서 주체사상이 어떠한 굴곡을 겪었으며, 그 과정에서 나타난 사상적 특징이 무엇인지를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 우선 주체사상의 이론적 위상이 변화한 과정을 역사적 맥락에서 살펴본 후, 위상변화의 원인을 세 측면에서 분석하였다. 주체사상은 대내외적 환경의 변화에 따른 권력의 필요성 때문에 그 이론적 위상과 내용의 강조점이 변화해 왔다. 주체사상의 이론적 위상 변화를 가져온 원인은 크게 볼 때, 유일사상체계 확립의 요구, 북한 지도부의 새로운 시대인식, 전후 20여년의 경제성장을 가능하게 만든 북한 특유의 사회주의 건설노선에 대한 자부심을 들 수 있다. 다음으로 주체사상의 역사적 변화과정에서 드러난 사상적 특징을 고찰하였다. 북한 지도부의 강력한 탈식민 열망은 주체사상이 마르크스-레닌주의를 대체하고 인류철학사상의 최고봉이라는 절대적 신념체계로 치닫는 동력이었으며, 주체사상 속에 포함된 유교전통은 정치적 리더십을 확립하고 사회주의 공업화를 촉진하기 위해 선택적으로 활용된 ‘만들어진 전통’이었다. 나아가 주체사상은 역사적 전개과정에서 단순한 통치이데올로기를 넘어 북한주민의 삶 속에 깊이 내면화된 종교적 차원으로 발전하였다.
