This thesis seeks to examine how Sartre, Levinas and Derrida define the other, and toilluminate the meaning and limit of the understanding of alterity in these philosopers. At first Sartredefines the other as another liberty and consciousness, finally this other is based on thesubjectivity. Thus the other as another subject appears in his gaze, and this gaze solidifies theego. On the contrary, the other in Levinas is not the another liberty, neither consciousness, but thefragile who doesn't occupy the place of subject. Taking over Levinas's interpretation of other,Derrida is concentrated on the ambivalence of other who could be not only the good neighbor, butalso the enemy when we have the absolute confidence in the other. After viewing the differenttheory of other, we could clarify the limit of Sartre's alterity founded on the inter-subjectivity, andclearly understand the signification of the theory of other in Levinas and Derrida.

본 논문은 사르트르와 레비나스 그리고 데리다에게서 타자의 규정을 검토하고, 세 철학자의타자론이 갖는 의의와 한계를 해명해 보고자 한다. 우선 사르트르는 타자를 자유와 의식으로 규정하고, 결국 이런 타자는 주체이다. 그리고 이 시선은 자아를 고착화하다. 반면에 레비나스에게는 타자는 다른 자유나 의식이 아니라 약자이고 주체의 위상을 갖지 못한 자이다. 이점에서 사르트르와는 달리 레비나스의 타자는 윤리적 의미의 타자이다. 데리다는 이런 레비나스의 타자성을 잘 물려받지만, 이런 타자성은 필연적으로 타자에 대한 전적인 신뢰를 갖기에 타자가 이웃이면서 동시에 적도될 수 있다는 양의성에 집중한다. 이상의 논의를 통해서 필자는 간주관성에 기반한 사르트르의 타자론의 문제점과 절대적 타자개념에 기반한 레비나스와 데리다의 타자론의의의와 문제점에 대해 명확한 이해를 제공할 것이다.
