In his Studies in the Midwest Neo-Confucianism in Korea, Professor Lee Sangik proposes hisown critical interpretation of the thoughts of Chu Hsi and Yulgok based on his understanding oftheir theory of Li and Qi. Professor Lee claims that the theory consists in the superposition of thethree discrete structures such as (1) principle and phenomenon, (2) form and material, and (3)morality and bodily disposition. Li means (1) the principle as reason, (2) the form as substance,the Way, and essence, or (3) the morality as morals in the thoughts of Chu Hsi and Yulgok. Qimeans (1) the phenomenon as what is governed, (2) the material as stuff, vehicle, andendowment, or (3) the bodily disposition as sensual appetite. Professor Lee claims that both ChuHsi and Yulgok committed the fallacy of category mistake by using those diverse meanings of Liand Qi indiscriminately. We demonstrate that professor Lee is mistaken in his criticism of them. We save the thoughts of Chu Hsi and Yulgok from the charge of the fallacy of category mistake,and show that the state of affairs, what ought to be, and the necessity are linked up in a stringin their thoughts.

이상익 교수는 기호성리학연구(畿湖性理學硏究)에서 주희(朱熹)와 율곡(栗谷)의 이기론(理氣論)을 (1) 원리와 현상, (2) 형상과 질료, (3) 도의(道義)와 형기(形氣), 이렇게 세 가지의 상이한 구조가 중첩된 것으로 파악하고 있다. 주희와 율곡의 철학에서 리(理)는 (1) 소이연(所以然)으로서의 원리를 의미하기도 하고, (2) 본(本), 도(道), 성(性)으로서의 형상을 의미하기도 하며, (3) 도덕성으로서의 도의(道義)를 의미하기도 한다. 또 기(氣)는 (1) 소연(所然)으로서의 현상을의미하기도 하고, (2) 구(具), 기(器), 기질(氣質)로서의 질료를 의미하기도 하며, (3) 육체적 욕망으로서의 형기(形氣)를 의미하기도 한다. 이 교수는 주희와 율곡이 리(理)와 기(氣)의 다양한 의미를 혼동하여 사용함으로써 범주 오류를 범하고 있다고 주장한다. 우리는 이 교수의 이러한 주장이 잘못된 것임을 하나하나 논증한다. 이 과정에서 우리는 주희와 율곡의 철학을 범주 오류의혐의에서 구해내면서 동시에 이들의 사유에서 사태와 당위와 필연이 하나로 이어져 있음을 보인다.
