The purpose of this research is to investigate how Optimism Enhancement Program effects children’s stress perception and stress coping. To achieve this purpose, Two out of six classes of S elementary school were selected as subjects. The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of the optimism enhancement program for 5 weeks, while the control group did not. After the experiment, a post-test was given to verify the effects of the program. The results of the quantitative analysis verifying the effects of the program were as follows. First, compared to the control group, the experimental group treated by the optimism enhancement program showed significant reduction in the level of stress perception and its sub-factors(stress related with parents, friends, teachers, studies). Second, the experimental group treated by the optimism enhancement program demonstrated significant development in stress coping and its sub-factors(active, pursuit of social support, aggressive, passive/avoidant) compared to the control group. These results were supported and intensified by content analysis. The results from content analysis showed that children have realized the importance of positive thinking and there were positive changes in their emotion.

본 연구의 목적은 낙관성 증진 프로그램이 초등학생의 스트레스 지각과 대처에 미치는 효과를 검증하는 것이다. 이를 위해 서울 소재의 S초등학교 5학년 6개 반중 연구자의 학급을 실험집단으로 선정하고 다른 한 학급을 통제집단으로 선정하였다. 실험집단에는 5주 간 총 10회기에 걸친 낙관성 증진 프로그램을 실시하였다. 통제집단에는 아무런 처치를 가하지 않았다. 프로그램 종료 후 실시한 검사지 반응 분석 결과 낙관성 증진 프로그램에 참여한 실험집단은 통제집단에 비하여 스트레스 지각 수준이 유의미하게 낮았고 스트레스 대처에 유의미한 수준에서 차이가 있었다. 또 아동 소감문 및 관찰 내용 분석 결과, 아동은 낙관성 증진 프로그램을 통해 자신의 자동적 생각을 이해하고 생각에 따라 자신의 감정뿐 아니라 이후 행동도 달라짐을 알고 생각의 중요성을 깨닫게 되었다. 또한 낙관적 사고 기법을 익혀 자기 주변에 일어나는 일들에 대해 긍정적인 사고를 형성하였으며 스트레스 상황에 처했을 때 포기하거나 외면하지 않고 긍정적인 마음을 갖고 문제를 해결해나가려는 의지를 보였다.
