This study focuses on illuminating existing researches and their related issuesregarding prefinal ending ‘-o-’ in medieval Korean language. Whether prefinalending ‘-o-’ appears in the utterance depends on its surrounding syntacticenvironments. Some suggest modality such as ‘intention’ has effects on theappearance of ‘-o-’. The issues on prefinal ending ‘-o-’ have been diversified sincethe earlier studies. The function of prefinal ending ‘-o-’ was examined on thegrounds of typological evidence. In Gugyeol texts which reflected premedievalKorean language, the distribution of ‘-o-’ was different from that of medievaltexts. The recent psycholinguistic evidences concerning language acquisitiondemonstrates the psychological reality of ‘-o-’ as a case recovery marker.

본고에서는 선어말어미 ‘-오-’에 대한 기존 연구 성과의 주요 내용을 소개하고 연구 쟁점을 살펴보는 한편 앞으로의 연구 전망을 제시하고자 한다. 본고에서는 선어말어미 ‘-오-’에 대한 초기의 연구들부터 최근까지의 연구들을 ‘-오-’에 대한 일원적 관점 대 다원적 관점, 1인칭과 화자, 일반언어학적타당성 및 언어유형론적 관점, 명사구 보문 구성과 관계절 구성의 상관성의관점 등 쟁점별로 살펴보았으며 이러한 일련의 논의들로부터 앞으로의 연구전망을 가늠해 보고자 하였다.
