After writing part I of “the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” Max Weber visited the USA. At that time he was 40 years old. In this article I analyse that Max Weber verified the connection of sekularized religion und capitalism in his visiting in USA, that in respect of sekularization of society, university model, bureaucracy, rationalization, and aristocratism he recognized the ‘Europeanization of America’, and that after visiting of USA, in the political respect, he hoped the ‘Americanization of Europe’. From 20th century until recent days we are making experience with the ‘Americanization of the world’ or ‘Americanization of Europe’. On the basis of this world’s reality, it should be very interesting to study Weber’s recognition of America. This article consists of three parts: First, studying Weber’s recognition of America which are projected in “the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism”. Second, following his traveling track in the USA and finding out his experiences with american society. Third, Scoping the ‘Weber-fever’ in the USA after that Parsons translated in the year of 1930 “the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism” in Englisch.

베버는 1904년 40세의 나이에『프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신』의 I부를 집필하고 미국 여행을 떠났다. 이 글은 그가 미국 여행에서 현실을 경험하면서 세속화된 종교와 자본주의의 긴밀히 연계를 확인했다는 점, 사회의 세속화, 대학모델, 귀족주의화, 합리화, 관료주의화라는 측면에서 ‘미국의 유럽화(Europeanization of America)’를 인식했다는 점, 미국 방문 이후 정치적 측면에서는 ‘유럽의 미국화(Americanization of Europe)’를 희망했다는 점을 살펴보려고 한다. 20세기 이후 현재까지 ‘전세계의 미국화’ 내지는 ‘유럽의 미국화’를 경험하고 있는 우리에게 베버가 경험한 ‘미국의 유럽화’ 또는 ‘유럽의 미국화’는 많은 시사점을 준다. 글은 다음과 같은 세 부분으로 구성된다. 첫째,『프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신』에 반영된 미국에 대한 인식을 살펴보고자 한다. 사회비평적 차원에서 미국은 그에게 긍정적인 측면과 부정적인 측면 둘 다 존재하고 있었다. 둘째, 1904년 8월 20일 브레멘을 출발하여 11월 19일에 유럽으로 돌아올 때까지 미국 여행의 루트를 따라가며 베버가 미국 사회에 대해 경험했던 것을 추적하고자 한다. 그는 유럽과 미국을 비교하며 다른 점과 같은 점을 찾고자 했다. 셋째, 1930년 탈코트 파슨스(Talcott Parsons)에 의해『프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신』이 영어로 번역된 이후 미국의 사회과학과 사회학계의 ‘베버열풍’에 대해 서술하고자 한다.
