The Study of Total Synthesis on Phytosphingosine and Evalution of Cosmetic Material Containing Phytosphingosine Derivatives

Recent studies indicate that ceramides from skin tissue and their synthetic analogues show a promise as therapeutic agents for pathogen such as atopic skin, psoriasis, ichthyosis and contact dermatitis. In this research, phytosphingosine and it's derivatives were synthesised and they were evaluated whether they could be used or not as cosmetic materials. Phytosphingosine was synthesized from the starting D-glucono-δ-lactone via overall 9 step processes and phytosphingosine derivative were synthesized by functional group transfomation of phytosphingosine. A new cream was compounded by addition of our phytosphingosine derivatives, which was treated on skin. The tested skin shows several positive effects such as improve of TEWL recovery and reduction of wrinkles. Moisturizing effect of phytosphingosine than tetra-acetyl phytosphingosine is good but phytosphingosine has a high melting point and low solubility so it has limitations to the application of a skin toner and lotion but it's suitable for cream. Tetra-acetyl phytosphingosine efficacy is lower than phytosphingosine but it has good compatibility and low melting point. So it may be used to apply cosmetic material of various product. In conclusion, phytosphingosine and its derivatives have a sufficient potentiality to be utilized as cosmetic additives.
