This research tried to examine the characteristics of the Russian mood in contemporary fashion design based on an understanding of Russian history and costume. Through the literature review, Russian history in terms of political, social, and cultural contexts was examined in the three periods of Old Russia, Imperial Russia, and Soviet Russia, and it was found that Russian costume has strong influences from East Slavic culture, Russian Orthodox, the Sartorial Revolution by Peter the Great in the 18th century, and the ideology of Russian Revolution in the early 20th century. The aesthetic characteristics of contemporary fashion design since 2000 reflected those Russian moods, which are categorized as follows: Russian folklore was represented with fashion items and accessories that identified East Slavic ethnic culture such as rubashka, sarafan, and kokoshnik, etc.; Russian opulence was expressed with luxurious fabrics, jewels, and gold embroideries influenced by Russian religion and west European culture; Russian avant-garde borrowed the image of Russian constructivism through a combination of geometric shapes and simple colors; Russian military was represented using the elements of Cossack’s or the Red Army’s attire such as a papahka hat, kaftan coat, loose pants, boots, epaulet, or Stalin-collared jacket, etc. It was interpreted that these aesthetic characteristics implied the meanings of longing for the fantasy and nostalgia of East Slavic culture; representation of cultural abundance of Russia; different viewpoints on the change of Russian political ideology; and the designers’ will of new aesthetic creation.

이 연구는 러시아의 역사와 복식에 대한 전반적 이해를 토대로 현대 패션에 반영된 러시아풍의 특성을 분석해 봄으로써 최근 패션계에 미치고 있는 러시아의 영향을 통찰해보고자 하였다. 고대 러시아, 제정 러시아, 소비에트 러시아로 구분된 러시아의 정치, 사회, 문화를 포함하는 역사적 맥락을 살펴보았고, 이를 통해 형성된 러시아의 복식문화에는 동슬라브 민족의 영향, 러시아 정교의 종교적 영향, 18세기 서구화 정책의 영향, 20세기 초 러시아 혁명사상의 영향이 강하게 반영되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 러시아적 영향을 반영한 2000년 이후 현대 패션의 사례를 분석한 결과 도출된 러시아풍의 특성은 다음과 같이 요약되었다. 첫째, 러시안 포클로어는 러시아 농민을 중심으로 계승된 동슬라브인의 민족적 정체성이 담긴 아이템과 장신구, 공예적 디테일을 차용한 디자인으로 표현되고 있었다. 둘째, 러시안 오퓰런스는 러시아 정교의 국교화 및 서구화 정책에 따라 화려한 직물, 보석, 금자수를 활용한 러시아 복식의 특징적 요소에 의해 표현되고 있었다. 셋째, 러시안 아방가르드는 혁명기 러시아 아방가르드 예술가나 디자이너에 의해 추구되던 기하학적 형태와 단순한 색채를 차용한 디자인으로 표현되고 있었다. 넷째, 러시안 밀리터리는 자유분방한 호전적 기질의 카자크와 근현대 러시아 혁명 및 공산주의적 이데올로기를 강하게 반영한 소비에트 붉은 군대의 제복 요소를 차용한 디자인으로 표현되고 있었다. 이러한 표현특성에는 보헤미안적인 동슬라브 민족의 판타지와 향수에 대한 동경, 타문화와의 혼성에 따른 문화적 풍요로움과 화려함에 대한 현대적 재해석, 러시아의 정치적 이데올로기 변천에 대한 다중적 시각과 함께 새로운 조형을 추구하는 디자이너의 미적 표현의지가 반영되어 있는 것으로 해석되었다.
