This study made an attempt to look at school violence using the lens of power hierarchy inside the classroom. As a means of contextual approach to school violence, the characteristics of high and low hierarchy of peers and the reason of formulating power hierarchy in the classroom were examined based on in-depth interview with adolescents. 20 middle school students were interviewed and their responses were analyzed using thematic analysis method. As a result, the students who have peers in upper grade level have high status and who have withdrawal personality have low status in classroom hierarchy. Adolescents in this study diagnosed that the student’s will to have dominance over peers caused the power hierarchy inside the classroom. School violence can be thought of power struggle between the peers who have the strong “back up” of upper grade level to possess a dominant position and the “innocent sheep” who are calm and prone to withdrawal.

본 연구는 학급 내에 존재하는 서열이라는 창으로 학교폭력에 대한 접근을 시도한 것이다. 청소년이 생각하는 서열이 높은 학생의 특징과 서열이 낮은 학생의 특징, 그리고 서열이 생기는 이유에 대한 진단을 살펴봄으로써, 학교폭력을 학급 내 서열이라는 창으로 바라보고자 하였다. 중학교 학생 20명을 대상으로 일대일 면담을 실시하였고, 주제분석방법을 사용하여 이들의 면담내용을 분석하였다. 서열이 높은 또래의 특성으로는 관계적 특성(주변에 선배가 있다), 신체적 특성(힘이 세 보인다), 언어적 특성(말이나 욕을 잘한다), 행동적 특성(나댄다)이 언급되었다. 서열이 낮은 또래의 특성으로는 성격적 특성-위축(소심하다), 신체적 특성(그저 그렇게 생겼다), 성격적 특성-이기심(자기만 생각한다), 행동적 특성(나댄다)이 언급되었다. 서열이 생기는 이유에 대한 진단으로는 우월지향(자기 힘을 과시하고 싶어 하기 때문에), 자기중심적(자기만 생각하기 때문에), 신체적 특성이 언급되었다. 본 연구결과 든든한 “빽”으로서의 선배를 갖고 있는 서열이 높은 자와 이들이 찾는 “순한 양” 사이의 힘의 역학이 학교폭력이라는 현상 밑에 흐르고 있는 기제임을 알 수 있었다.
