Interest in Jang Hui-bin(장희빈) has developed across a breadth of historical accounts and classic literature, mostly directed towards highlighting her evil deeds. Nonetheless, the process through which she has emerged as wicked has not yet been closely examined. Accordingly, this study discusses the qualities and characteristics developed through her representations throughout the classical novels in which she appears. This study takes up classical novels such as Park Tae-bo(박태보), Inhyeonwanghu(인현왕후), and Great King Sukjong(숙종), as these works describe each titular character’s life with a special focus on their relationships with Jang Hui-bin. They can also be confirmed as progenitors of the process through which Jang Hui-bin has been stereotyped as a wicked woman, her negative aspects emphasized, and the nature of her influence on later works determined. This depiction of Jang Hui-bin has progressed uniformly across both literary and historical accounts. It is deeply related to the situation in which she was excluded from the political order of Seoin(서인) in the late Joseon period, due to her political affiliation with Namin(남인).

장희빈에 대한 관심은 역사적으로나 문학적으로 현재까지 지속되고 있는데, 이는 여성 역사인물 가운데 그녀가 대표적인 악인으로 인식되고 있기 때문이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 고전소설을 중심으로 장희빈이 악녀로 부각되어 온 과정과 그 특징적 양상에 대하여 면밀히 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 논문에서는 박태보, 인현왕후, 숙종대왕 등의 이름을 제목으로 하고 있는 고전소설을 텍스트로 하였는데, 이들 작품들에 등장하는 인물들은 장희빈과의 관계를 중심으로 각 인물의 개별적 삶이 구체화되고 있기 때문이다. 그리고 이들 작품에서는 장희빈이 소설적으로 수용되고, 악녀로 전형화 되며, 부정적인 측면이 강조되고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 그녀에 대한 형상은 문학 작품에서 관련 내용이 일종의 공식처럼 활용되며 전이되어가기도 한다. 이러한 장희빈의 형상은 문학적으로 뿐만 아니라, 역사적으로도 같은 맥락을 찾아볼 수 있다. 이는 그녀의 정치적 기반이 남인이었기에, 조선후기 서인 중심의 정치질서에서 그녀가 배척되었던 상황과 연계할 수 있기 때문이다.
