In this essay, I would like to critically reflect on the 2013 Assembly of World Council of Churches (WCC) in Busan based on my experience as a participant. Furthermore, I am going to make some suggestions on how the Korean church should reflect upon itself and set the direction for future reformation, as well as delineate what are the new perspectives required in the mission field for Korean missionaries. Inviting thousands of church leaders from all over the world to Busan, the Korean church revealed itself to the world with candor, and served the guests earnestly. The conference provided opportunity for the Korean church to self-reflect and reaffirmed its prominence amongst the churches of the world. This, in turn, exposed several challenges for the future mission work of the Korean Church. To begin with, the Korean Church has once again been recognized as an important partner for mission work, and the conference has created a platform to cooperate with all churches regardless of nationalities and locations. The Busan Assembly had shown both of our strengths and weaknesses and initiated a chance to make new progress. Early morning prayer, Bible study, and missionary oriented mind are some of the strengths that the Korean Church has, and at the same time they are needed to be developed for the maturity of the Church in terms of sharing and serving. In addition, based on the agreement reached in the Busan Assembly, the Korean Church can establish new cooperative relationship with missionaries all over the world. By collaborating with WCC, which is the global network of His Body, the Church, the Korean Church would be able to actively take part in God’s work to accelerate the spread of His words and life all over the world. Statements on mission and evangelism adopted in WCC Assembly and CWME meetings should be well understood by the Korean local churches and utilized as a good standard in the cooperation between different nations, denominations, and regional churches. Living in a globalized world, Christians must be sensitive to social, economic, political, and religious problems occurring in every corner of the globe. People, especially the weak, are suffering from and the ecosystem is afflicted by the conflicts, wars, natural disasters, and unequal distribution of capital and technology which arises in the process of globalization. At this point of time, Christians are called to commiserate with he poor and be the witness of the Gospel. Whether we want or not, the Korean Church is in a position to demonstrate its leadership and fulfill the important missionary task. I hope and pray that the Korean Church would take the Busan Conference as a momentum to grow and mature one step further to lead the world mission.

필자는 본 글에서 2013년 WCC 부산총회에 참석하면서 느끼고 경험하고 문제의식을 갖게 된 것들을 정리하고 , 앞으로 한국교회가 어떻게 자신을 성찰하고 한국선교를 쇄신해나갈 것이며, 한국 선교사가 선교지에서 새롭 게 가져야할 관점들이 무엇인가에 대해 논하려 한다. 한국교회는 세계에서 수백 교회, 수천 명의 교회 대표들 을 안방으로 초청하여 우리의 모습을 속속들이 보여주고 열성으로 섬겼다. 부산총회는 한국교회로 하여금 자 신에 대해 많이 생각하고 돌아보게 하였다. 또한 세계 속에서 한국교회의 위상을 다시 한 번 확인해보는 좋은 기회였다. 한국교회의 미래 선교를 위해 금번 총회가 우리에게 몇몇 과제를 부여하였다. 먼저 세계교회가 한국교회를 선교의 중요한 동반자로 인식하고 세계 어느 지역에서든 함께 일할 수 있는 발판 을 마련했다는 데 큰 의미가 있다. 부산총회는 우리의 약점과 장점을 동시에 보여주고 새로운 도약을 할 수 있 는 계기를 마련해줬다. 새벽기도, 성경공부, 선교지향적인 마인드 등 한국교회의 장점들을 더 개발하고 성숙 시켜 세계교회와 나눔으로 서로 풍성케 하며 봉사하는 한국교회가 되어야 할 것이다. 한국교회는 부산총회에서 이룬 협력의 장을 바탕으로 세계 각처의 선교사들을 통하여 새로운 협력관계를 만 들어낼 수 있을 것이다. 한국교회는 WCC라는 주님의 몸된 교회의 지구적 네트워크를 따라서 하나님의 말씀 과 생명의 흐름이 더 가속화되도록 한 부분을 감당할 수 있을 것이다. WCC 총회와 CWME 모임에서 도출된 선교와 전도에 대한 선언문들이 한국의 지역교회에서 더 잘 이해되고, 국가간, 교단간, 지역교회 간의 선교협력에 좋은 준거로 활용되어야 할 것이다. WCC 비회원 교회들에게도 WCC 선교문서의 진정한 목적과 방향을 잘 이해시켜 그들도 WCC 네트워크를 잘 활용할 수 있도록 해야 할 것 이다. 지구화시대에 사는 그리스도인은 세계 각처에서 발생하는 사회적, 경제적, 정치적, 종교적 문제에 대해 민감 해야 한다. 분쟁, 전쟁, 천재지변, 세계화 과정에서 발생하는 자본과 기술의 편중으로 인해 약자들이 더욱 소 외되고 고통을 당하며 생태계도 신음하고 있다. 이 시점에 그리스도인들은 가난한 자들과 함께하면서 복음을 증거하는 자가 되어야 할 것이다. 원하든 원하지 않든 한국교회는 세계교회 가운데 리더십을 발휘하며 중요한 선교적 역할을 감당해야 할 위치에 있다. 부산총회를 계기로 한 걸음 더 성장하고 성숙하며 세계선교를 이끌 어가는 한국교회가 되기를 바란다.
