Hyun Jin Gun, a sophisticated novelist and pioneer of realistic literature, left behind a total of four historical novels. The present study examines the author’s literary intent, focusing on “Muyoungtop (“Pagoda of No Shadow”) and “Sunwha Princess”. Muyoungtop, drawing on the tale of the construction of Seokgatap (Sakyamuni Pagoda), was written in the time of King Kyoung-Duc of the Silla Dynasty. Given that this work was released during a period when abnormal weather occurred frequently and signs of uprising were prevalent, the author expressed national unity by describing how each story of Seokgatap is composed of one stone. In addition, the author realized that progressive nationalism overcomes suppressed social contradictions, giving birth to a renewed and unified nation, as shown by helping Juman and Asanye revive as one Vairocana Buddha. “Sunwha Princess” was written in the time of King Jin-Pyung, when Silla was subjected to frequent invasion by Baejae and Goguryeo, but prospered nonetheless. In this novel, the author cautioned against helpless submission to the reality of the time, emphasizing a self- strengthening spirit regardless of rank and class.

기교파 작가이자 사실주의 문학의 개척자로 알려져 있는 현진건은 총 4편의 역사소설을 남겼다. 본고에서는 󰡔무영탑󰡕과 󰡔선화공주󰡕를 중심으로 작가가 의도한 것이 무엇인지를 검토했다. 석가탑 축조에 얽힌 설화에서 소재를 취한󰡔무영탑󰡕의 배경은 신라 경덕왕 대였다. 잦은 기상이변과 내분의 기운이 감돌았던 이때를 압제 하에 발표한 작품 속으로 끌어들인 작가는 석가탑이 층마다 하나의 돌로 이루어져다는 점을 들어 민족의 단일성을 드러냈다. 또 주만과 아사녀를 하나의 원불로 부활케 하여 압제 하의 사회적 모순을 극복하고 민족화합으로 거듭나길 촉구하는 진보적 민족주의를 실현했다. 󰡔선화공주󰡕는 백제와 고구려의 잦은 침략에도 수성했던 진평왕 대를 배경으로 하여 압제 하의 시대현실에 대한 도리 없는 굴함을 경계하고 빈부귀천의 가림 없이 자강의식을 갖도록 강조했다.
