In our society, the rate of suicide is very high compared with OECD countries, so the government is trying to reduce the rate of suicide cases. Although there are so many studies of suicide which are carried out, it’s still insufficient of the studies focusing on suicide among occupation groups. In particular, People recognized police officer as a good job. However the rate of police officer committing suicide is higher than general people. So I study the factors affecting on the police officers’ suicide tendencies and recommend the ways to prevent from the police officer from committing suicide. For this purpose, I carried out survey to police officers (967) around the nation. The survey was conducted during 2weeks in 2011 from 19 September to 1 October. According to this study, the causes of suicide are depression and domestic stress. In other words, if the police officer with low self-control suffer from depression, he(she) is likely to think of committing suicide. And if the police officer with low self-control is under domestic stress, he(she) is likely to think committing suicide. Therefore, in order to prevent the police officers in their tendency to commit suicide, it is needed to improve self-control and reduce the levels depression. And one of the important factors is domestic stress. The main reason of domestic stress is family trouble. And the lack of communication and/ or bonding time causes the family trouble. Thus, it is needed to offer a free time for the police officers in order to have time with their family.

우리사회의 자살률은 OECD 국가 중에서도 매우 높은 실정이기에 자살률을 낮추기 위한 국 가의 관심이 매우 높다. 따라서 자살률의 감소를 위해서 자살예방센터를 중심으로 국가 및 사회유관기관과 단체에 의한 법적·제도적 노력이 이루어졌고, 다양한 연구가 수행되었다. 그 러나 지금까지 자살과 관련한 연구는 성별, 연령별 집단을 중심으로 한 연구가 이루어졌을 뿐 직업군으로 구별한 자살관련 연구는 부족하였다. 특히 사회에서 좋은 직업으로 인정받고 있는 경찰공무원의 자살이 높은 현실에서 경찰공무원의 자살원인을 밝혀 경찰공무원이 직무 를 성실히 수행할 수 있는 환경을 마련할 필요성이 제기된다. 이를 위해서 이 연구에서는 경찰공무원을 대상으로 할당집락표집을 실시하여 2011년 9월 19 일부터 10월 1일까지 약 2주에 걸쳐 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 967부의 설문지를 분석에 이 용하였다. 조사결과 경찰공무원의 자살생각을 유발하는 원인은 우울증과 가정스트레스가 매우 큰 것으 로 나타났다. 즉 자기통제력이 낮은 경찰공무원이 우울증을 경험하거나 가정스트레스가 높 은 경우 자살생각을 하는 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 경찰공무원의 자살을 예방하기 위해서 는 자기통제력을 향상시키는 노력이 필요하며, 우울증을 감소시킬 수 있는 보건차원의 배려 가 요구된다. 또한 경찰공무원의 자살생각에는 가정 내 스트레스가 주요 요인인 것으로 나타 났는데, 이것은 무엇보다 근무시간이 많고, 가정에 적극적인 참여가 불가능한 상황에서 가정 내 불화로 인한 스트레스가 큰 것이다. 따라서 가정 내의 스트레스를 줄일 수 있도록 여가시 간을 보장해 주는 등 근무환경을 제도적으로 보장하는 것이 필요하다.
