This study empirically analysed the state and determinants of citizen attitudes toward the police on A city in Gyeongsangnam-do Province. Previous researches showed the needs for empirical studies having employed foreign immigrants and considering contextual-level as well as individual-level variables. Statistical analysis was implemented with 263 questionnaires out of 320. The results are as follow. 1) Attitudes toward the police could be classified into five scales ; Police demeanor, police characteristics, aggressive police activities, community policing, responsibility for crime control. 2) Citizen attitudes toward the police showed above the normal(3.00) at every five scales. 3) Nationality, direct/indirect contact with the police and the dynamics within the contact, and quality of life were found to influence citizen attitudes toward the police. Of course they were differ on attitudes scales. Based on this analysis, some implications for the police organization and future research needs are suggested.

이 연구에서는 경찰에 대한 시민들의 태도를 분석하고 이에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인들을 식별하고자 하였다. 선행 연구들을 중심으로 경찰에 대한 태도 연구의 중요성과 영향요인들 을 식별한 후 경상남도 소속 기초자치단체인 A 시 주민들 - 결혼이주여성 포함 - 을 대상으 로 분석하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 경찰에 대한 태도가 다양한 차원으로 분류될 수 있 음을 확인하였다. 경찰과 관련된 포괄적 또는 구체적 차원들에 대한 시민들의 평가적 진술 내용들을 토대로 이 연구에서는 ‘경찰대응태도,’ ‘경찰외형특성,’ ‘적극적 경찰활동,’ ‘지역사 회경찰활동,’ 그리고 ‘범죄통제책임’의 다섯 차원으로 분류할 수 있었다. 둘째, A 시 주민들은 경찰과 관련된 다양한 차원들에 대하여 보통(3.00)보다 높은 수준으로 평가하고 있음을 확인 하였다. 셋째, 경찰에 대한 태도는 국적, 경찰과의 직․간접적 상호작용, 그리고 지역사회 환경 에 대한 평가 등 다양한 요인들로부터 영향을 받고 있으며 세분화된 태도 차원들에 따라 차 별적인 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 토대로 향후 경찰에 대한 태도와 관련된 경찰 차원의 전략, 그리고 후 속 연구 방향 등에 대하여 살펴보았다.
