is Godard’s most classically tragic film, and it is the one that has had the greatest practical influence on the subsequently history of cinema. presents 12 episodes in the life of a young woman who turns to prostitution to pay her rent. Godard was affected by Sartre’s existentialism and Brecht’s epic theater and explored the combination of documentary and fiction and realism and theater, and pictorial mise en scéne and realistic sound in this film. In this paper, I attempt to analyse the sound of this film to interpret the sound structure in . Godard was aware of the power of sound and experimented diverse methods such as ‘direct sound’, narrations, reading a text aloud, silence effect and subjective choice of the sound in . Unlike other classical sound theorists and directors, he privileged spoken language and presented a new cinema language through a specific choice and control of sound. I try to apply Godard’s creative use and effect of sound in for systematical distinction to Daniel Percheron’s sound taxonomy which is the purpose to differentiate between the iconic and diegetic functions of the sound-track, as well as distinguish between music, words, and sound effects. Godard used extended sound in time and space in and presented a new possibility of use of sound.
