At the center of every fire investigation is origin and cause determination. Since the fire investigationis a science, the fire investigator must try to solve the puzzle by gathering as much information as they can,from as diverse sources as they can. Therefore, a systematic approach should be used for every investigation. By following the burn patterns from areas of least damaged to areas of heavily damaged, you can trace thepatterns back to a point close to the point of origin. Vector diagram method uses arrows to indicate areas fromthe most damage to the least damage. The purpose of this study was to show systematic approach throughinvestigation case. By reducing errors that can be resulted from non-scientific approach in which the causedetermination is first focused then to the point of origin, the completeness of fire investigation is expectedto be enhanced.

화재조사의 핵심은 발화원과 발화원인의 규명에 있다. 화재조사는 과학이기 때문에 화재조사관은 퍼즐을 푸는 방식으로 다양한 종류의 출처로부터 가능한 한 많은 정보를 수집하여 조사에 임하여야한다. 그러므로 체계적 접근은 모든 조사에 적용되어야 한다. 발화원은 최소 손상구역으로부터 최대 손상구역으로 연소패턴을 추적함으로써 규명될 수 있으며, 벡터 다이어그램은 화살표를 이용하여 최대 손상구역에서 최소 손상구역을 가리킨다. 본 연구에서는 화재조사 사례를 통하여 이러한 체계적인 접근방식을 제시함으로써 화재조사의 완성도를 높이고 발화원보다 화재원인을 먼저 추정하는 비과학적 접근방식에 따른 오류를 줄이고자 하였다.
