Research and utilization of calligraphy as a design have been actively conducted due to the increase of demand for emotional marketing in humanity as digital culture is changing rapidly. Calligraphy means beautiful characters and also has something in common with the Munjado from our Minhwa in terms of design form and formative characteristic. It is because Munjado is formed by artistic convergence between characters and paintings. Recently, the usage of calligraphy has been increased in many cases such as brand symbol design, package logo design, movie poster and advertisement design. The objective of this study is to develop new expression methods of calligraphy by studying various works which were done with Korean calligraphy in addition to Munjado from Minhwa. This research was to reveal the correlation of design factors by studying complementary value between new verbal code and visual code of characters thru case analysis of calligraphy. As a result, Firstly, it is symbolization. Symbolization makes symbolic visual formation by combining characters with painting factor. Next is creativity. Third, it is formative characteristics. Formative characteristics express the character’s line, stroke and organization of space in a rhythmical way. Lastly it is esthetics. It gives esthetic joy of the visual work that beyond the meaning of characters.

디지털문화의 급속한 변화 속에서 휴머니티소구의 감성마케팅이 떠오르며 디자인분야에 있어 캘리그라피 연 구와 활용이 활발하게 이루어지고 있다. 캘리그라피는 아름다운 필적의 개념으로, 조선후기에 풍미했던 우리 민화의 문자도와 디자인적인 형태성과 조형성이 서로 상통한다. 그것은 문자도가 문자와 그림의 아름다운 예 술적 융합이라는 형식을 갖기 때문이다. 최근에는 브랜드심벌디자인, 패키지 로고디자인, 영화포스터, 광고디 자인에 이르기까지 컨셉에 맞는 그림문자 요소를 지닌 캘리그라피 표현의 사용빈도가 늘어가고 있다. 한국의 문화적 가치가 살아있는 민화 속 문자도 작품과 한글 캘리그라피의 다양한 작품들을 연계해서 연구함으로써, 캘리그라피의 새로운 표현 방향을 모색하는 것을 본 논문의 목적이라 하겠다. 문자도의 문헌연구와 화보, 도판 등을 수집․분석하고 문자도의 형식을 변용한 작품분석, 최근 캘리그라피 사 례분석을 통하여 문자의 새로운 언어코드와 시각코드의 상보적 가치를 연구하여 디자인적 요소의 연관성을 탐구․분석하고자 했다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 문자에 그림요소를 결합시켜 심벌릭한 시각적 형상을 만드는 상징성. 둘째, 문자에 의미를 불어 넣어 독특한 생명력을 살아나게 하는 독창성. 셋째, 문자로서의 타이포그래피가 아닌 글자의 선과 획, 공 간구성을 시각적으로 리듬 있게 표현하는 조형성. 넷째, 문자의 개념을 넘어 예술적 시각 작품의 미적 즐거움 을 주는 심미성이라 하겠다.
