The purpose of this study was to determine what Korean children think about God and to identify variables that make differences in a child’s concept of God through open-ended questions. Three hundred sixty children, from kindergarten to sixth-grade, who attended church, participated. More than 60% of these children answered the question, “Who is God?” using theological terms, such as, Holy one, Jesus, Creator, or King (Ruler), and only 15% responded with emotional and relational concepts including loving One, great One, or One who has love and justice. Of the nine variables that may make differences among children’s responses, the three most determinative were church size, denomination, and child’s age. Considering that 90% of churches attended by the sample represent different church sizes, it is possible to draw the inference that the doctrines and theologies, which each church adheres to, make up the differences in the children’s concepts of God. Spiritual disciplines, such as rate of church attendance and number of religious activities, were accounted for few differences God concept answers. These disciplines were less influential than the researcher expected.

본 연구의 목적은 어린이들이 하나님에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가를 파악하고 하나님 개념에 차이를 만드는 변인들을 발견하는 것이다. 유치원부터 초등학교 6학년에 이르는 360명의 어린이들이 본 연구에 참여하였다. “하나님은 어떤 분이라고 생각하니?”라는 질문에 60%이상의 어린이들이 성령님(삼위일체), 예수님, 창조주, 왕(통치자)라는 신학적 용어로 답하였고, 15%가 사랑의 하나님, 위대하신 분, 사랑과 공의의 하나님이라는 정서적이고 관계적인 개념으로 대답하였다. 9개 변인 중, 가장 많은 하나님 개념에 차이를 보이는 변인은 교회 규모, 교단, 연령이었다. 연구의 특성상 한 교회가 한 교회 규모를 대표하는 경우가 많았기에 교회와 교단이 추구하는 신학과 교리가 하나님 개념의 차이를 생성한다고 유추하게 되었다. 교회 출석률에 따라서 어린이들의 하나님 개념은 차이를 보이지 않았고, 교회와 가정에서의 신앙교육 횟수를 포함하는 영적 훈련은 13가지 개념 중 서 너개 하나님 개념에서만 차이를 보였고 이는 연구자가 기대한 것 보다 적은 영향력이었다.
