According to Philip Sheldrake, there is a tendency in the study of Christian spirituality, in which the so- called inner experience is often dissociated from spiritual practice and also spiritual practice from everyday life. Sheldrake calls this tendency the “detached interiority.”In principle, prayer as a way of spiritual practice cannot be separate both from theological understanding and from everyday life. A theology of prayer is therefore demanded that is based on a healthy theology and enhances a discerning participation in the process of everyday life. This article considers the possibility of constructing a Protestant theology of prayer in exploring Paul Tillich ’s understanding of prayer. For Tillich, prayer is the spiritual longing of a finite being to return to its origin and the elevation of the heart toward the ultimate concern. An ecstatic and revelatory event, it also has to do with participating in the ground and abyss of being that transcends the subject-object relation. His understanding of prayer has a Protestant theological background, in which it is related to various theological themes. For the purpose of this study, we will take a brief look at Tillich’s typology of the philosophy of religion, which constitutes the background of his theology prayer. In his thought, mysticism and contemplation are illustrated as the sacramental-vertical element of religion that is well preserved in the Catholic church, and Protestantism should make this element as the foundation of its creative development. In what follows, we will explore his definitive expressions for prayer, then, on this basis, sketch out spiritual theological implications of his theology of prayer. Tillich’s theology of prayer is mediates prayer and everyday life, provides a basic matrix in which to construct an effective Protestant theology of prayer, and can be used as a methodological principle in incorporating various types of prayer developed in the tradition of Christian spirituality into the context of the Protestant church.
