As the 40-hour working week system and the 5-day school week system have been adopted and 'One Student, One Sport Policy' of the Ministry of Education has been practiced, it is obvious that the understanding of students' leisure-time activity awareness and its patterns will help to promote physical education in schools, to lead it to 'Sport for All', a national policy. In addition, as the Ministry of Educational offices in each city and province, it is time that we should provide students with various after-school activities and leisure activities according to the individual needs and the regional circumstances. The aim of this study is to give a foundation for a better understanding of students leisure-time activity awareness and its patterns, which can lead to promote their voluntary participation in various school sport activities, and ultimately to improve the quality of their life. For this study, 332 students(173 male and 159 female students) were chosen as the final population of concern through stratified cluster random sampling among the population of 450 students attending middle schools in the city of Uijeongbu, Gyeounggi Province as of June, 2007. Frequency analysis, percentage analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis have been made to the data using SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) 11.5 program. Calculated Cronbach's alphas were 0.80 for student's leisure-time activity awareness and 0.93 for its patterns, which can be considered as reliable. The result of this study as follows: First, awareness of leisure-time physical activity was not shown to be high among middle school students with a total average score of 3.43 out of 5. Regardless of their gender, awareness was high among the 3rd grade students in good health condition who take part in regular leisure-time activities. Second, the more highly students think of social and spiritual values, the more leisure-time activities they participate in. Third, among different leisure-time activities, students who think highly of social values tend to participate more in social activities whereas students who regard philosophical values highly were engaged more in their personal hobbies and students who appreciate spiritual and physical values are more likely to take part in sports activities. This study was conducted only with middle school students in Uijeongbu area. Therefore, the result of this study should be carefully applied to a broader context and suggestions should be made for ways to develop more effective and objective study methods.
