This study surveyed total 306 adult respondents who registered swimming lessons at a sports center in Seoul. The questionnaire was composed of 3 demographic questions, 15 independent variable questions about basic psychological needs, 6 mediator variable questions about vitality and 3 exercise adherence questions. Collected data then underwent descriptive statistical analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equations modelling by using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. The results are the followings. First, the analysis of relation between basic psychological needs and vitality of swimming participants showed that the path coefficient value is 0.430 (t = 5.243, p = .001) which represents that the basic psychological needs has statistically significant static affects on vitality. Second, the analysis on the relation between participants’ basic psychological needs and exercise adherence revealed that the path coefficient value of the two was 0.192 (t = 2.556, p = .011). This shows that the desire does not have statistically significant static affects on exercise adherence. Third, the analysis on the relations between swimming participants’ vitality and exercise adherence indicated that vitality has statistically significant static effects on exercise adherence as the path coefficient value of the two factors is 0.204 (t = 2.800, p = .005). Fourth, bootstrapping was conducted in order to examine if the mediator effect of vitality is statistically significant. As a result, it was found that the mediator effect is statistically significant for the statistical significance is p = .006. Hence, it is confirm that vitality has a valid mediator effect on the relations of basic psychological needs and exercise adherence.
