Through engagement in a qualitative life history dissertation study of three African American art educators conducted in 2012, I examined—through their personal narratives—how each participant experienced and reconciled their social and professional identities of African American, artist, and teacher. Aiming to locate their life stories as they operated in particular social, historical, and institutional circumstances, the task with each participant in this study was to get as close as possible to understanding and rendering elements of their lives in context. Working in tandem with life history approaches, I sought to capture richness, complexity, and dimensionality of human experience through the use of social science portraiture in order to convey how participants negotiated and embraced the identities of African American/artist/teacher. I outline my use of life history work, using portraiture as a method of inquiry and representation in order to illuminate benefits and challenges associated with using these research methods in art education. Finally, I illustrate the use of this method in facilitating a holistic representation of lives lived in context, detailing the subtleties of human experience by addressing the role of sociostructural forces on the key issue of racial identity.
