Unlike Choi Inhoon's other plays,「Hans and Gretel」has not been studied enough. One of the reason why it has been regarded as an exceptional work is that「Hans and Gretel」looks like a foreign play. In this play we can not see any sign or evidence as a Korean work in terms of the characters and the dramatic situation. But that distinct characteristics might be a key point to understand the essence of this work. This play shows Choi's creative psychology which dreams that it is beyond the realm of Korean Literature and exists in the field of World Literature. The first external feature of 「Hans and Gretel」 is the fact that almost all writing materials are from European cultural works including German culture. It borrows multiple european motifs. They are various from the title of a fairy tale, as well as a visual and auditory images, to the associated writer and philosopher. This play aims for a universal theme oriented upward soothing all human through the value of aging and love. At this point, the distinctiveness relevant to a specific history or an ethnic community might become blur. This work shows ambiguous political stance for the Nazi and the Holocaust. It would provoke more sensitive reactions in western european society, we can guess. Even though main character Hans is a serious-minded person who pursues an ontological meaning, he could not avoid his own historical responsibility as a war criminal. Ironically, the dream of world literature that this work shows, is valid only within the limits of the Korean Literature.

최인훈의 희곡「한스와 그레텔」은 그의 다른 희곡들과 달리 그동안 충분한 연구 대상이 되어오지 못했다. 번역극처럼 보이는 그 외양 때문에 예외적 작품으로 간주되어온 것이다. 이 희곡은 등장인물이나 극적 상황에 있어서 한국 작품으로서의 증거나 흔적을 보여주지 않는다. 하지만 바로 그 분명한 특징이 이 작품의 본질을 이해하기 위한 핵심적 지점이 될 수 있다. 이 희곡은 한국문학의 영역을 넘어 세계문학의 장(field) 안 에 존재하기를 꿈꾼 작가의 창작 심리를 보여준다. 첫 번째 외면적 특징은, 독일을 비롯한 유럽문화의 소재들로 작품을 채운 것이다. 제목이 되기도 한 동화 뿐 아니라, 시각적․ 청각적 이미지, 연상되는 작가 및 철학자에 이르기까지 유럽의 모티브들을 다양하게 차용한다. 내용상으로는, 노화와 사랑의 가치를 통해 모든 인간을 위로하는 보편적 주제를 지향한다. 이 지점에서 특정 역사나 민족 공동체와 관련된 특수성의 문제는 흐려질 가능성이 생긴다. 이 작품은 나치의 유대인 대학살에 대해 애매한 정치적 입장을 보이는데, 이는 서구 유럽 사회에서라면 더 민감한 반응 을 불러일으키리라 추측된다. 남주인공 한스가 존재론적 의미를 추구하는 진지한 철학적 인간일지라도, 전범으로서의 역사적 책임은 회피할 수 없을 것이다. 역설적이게도, 이 작품이 보여주는 세계문학의 꿈은 한국문학의 한계 안에서만 유효한 것이다.
