Many studies about writer, Kim Seung­Ok has been limited to a few works published in 1960s without considering 1970's works. Here I will focus on the whole period of his works to spotlight unknown aspects of Kim Seung­Ok novels. In this study, writer's consciousness is analyzed by looking at the way he recognizes reality and responds to Author's autobiographical experiences. Especially writer's consciousness and relate d motif is utilized as a useful tool in understanding Kim Seung­Ok's novels. The main background of Kim Seung­Ok novels is Seoul in 1960s~70s. The way characters communicate in Seoul reflects the times when linguistic conversation became impossible. Instead, the writer suggests th at it is only money and material that enables to link broken relationshi p of social members, writing about isolated human life and overwhelmin g materialism. His works usually have characters who try to apply mat erial communication to contradictory reality, showing tragic features of Kim Seung­Ok novels. In 1960's and 1970's when economic development had been accelerate d to get rid of national poverty, rapid changes in economic environment caused changes in life style and social values. Continuing industrializati on and capitalization even affects private lives of social members. In su ch a situation, Kim Seung­Ok novels throw a question about how an individual deal with this confusing social problems. He also suggests th at products of capitalism are false illusion though they look fascinating. Kim Seung­Ok points out the problem of 'ego' from relationship with others in a common life. He successfully talks about contemporary problems with a broad viewpoint by describing an individual who can't help being lonely in a common life. And his stories are mainly based on strong desire to communicate with others and be a member of a new community through such a communication. Therefore, the problems his works had struggled with are obviously related to our problems as long as individuals are not free from society and materialism.

본고는 김승옥 작가와의 대담을 통하여 규명하게 된 작가의 자전적 체험이 그의 창작 세계에 어떤 의미를 더했는지 살펴보고 나아가 그가 절필하게 된 사유를 규명해보고자 하였다. 김승옥의 소설에 빈번하게 등장하는 특징 두 가지로 아버지 부재와 서울에 상경한 지방출신 남성의 서울 고투기를 다루고 있다는 점을 꼽을 수 있다. 이는 어린 시절 여순반란사건으로 아버지를 여의고 가난 속에 서울대 재학시절을 어렵게 보내야 했던 김승옥의 개인사와 접한 관련 을 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 진정한 삶과 가난 사이에서 빚어지는 현실인식에 대한 딜레마는 김승옥을 판단정지하게 하던 화두였다. 그러다 광주항쟁이 터지자 동아일보의 중편 「먼지의 방」연재를 15회 만에 자진 중단하는 등 정치적 상황에 대한 판단정지로 이어져 김승옥은 절필에 이르게 되었고 그 후 삶을 지탱하기 위한 방어로 종교를 선택하게 되었음을 알 수 있다. 김승옥은 보통 60년대의 작가로 호명되지만 그의 문제의식들은 결코 60년대에 박제될 수 없는 현재 진행형의 것들이다. 김승옥 문학은 일상 생활에 대한 거부와 편입 사이에서 갈등하면서 현실 사회체제의 운영원리에 대해 고뇌하고 있으며 산업화시대의 인간 소외와 윤리의 문제 등에 대해 예민한 시각을 확립하고 있다. 이는 자본주의가 존속하는 한 영원히 현재 진행형의 문제일 수밖에 없다는 점에서 김승옥 문학의 의미는 현재를 사는 우리의 문제적 화두로도 볼 수 있는 것이다.
