HwangDuckGil was a prominent orthodox scholar of the “SungHoSchool” which emerged from the teachings of Lee-Hwang. Later scholars following these teachings include Jung-Gu, Lee-Ick, Ahn-JungBock and Heo-Jeon, HwangDuckGil’s best pupil. HwangDuckGil played a key role as are presentative of “Gyeonggi Nam-In” compiling a collection of books which included twenty of his own works. This article examines ChoHockGaGo in terms of bibliography. ChoHockGaGo is a manuscript among HwangDuckGil works and it was not included in his work, HaReouGip, instead, it was included in his biography, ChoHockPeun. This ChoHockPeun seems to be called ChoHockGaGo It is assumed that HwangDuckGill wrote the book at age 38 during the period when he produced IlWongJipYo. However others contest that is was written when he was age 71 years after he completed “DockSeoChaJaeDo” and “IlSungDo”. ChoHockGaGo is a guide book for academic learners. Its contents includes teachings on a wide range of topics including ethics and morality, system and organisation, animals, arithmetic, weights and measures, weaponry, the Chinese classics.

황덕길은 退溪 李滉에서 시작하여 寒岡 정구(鄭逑)와 星湖 이익(李瀷), 그리고 順菴 安鼎福으로 이어지는 星湖學派의 정통을 계승한 학자이며, 제자인 性齋 허전(許傳)에게 학문적 전통을 이어 준 인물로서 近畿 南人의 상징적인 존재로 20여 종의 저술을 하였으며 다른 도서의 편찬과 간행에도 적극 참여하였다. 본고에서는 황덕길의 저술 중에서 필사본으로 전해지고 있는 『初學可考』를 대상으로 서지학적 관점에서 고찰하였다. 이 책은 황덕길의 문집인 『하려집』에는 이 저술이 포함되 어 있지 않고, 행장에 『初學編』이라는 저술이 기록되어 있는 『초학가고』이다. 연구내용은 이 책의 저술 배경, 체재 및 구성, 그 내용과 특징을 서지학적으로 분석하였다. 『初學可考』내용은 天文 및 地理에서부터 人倫․制度․動物․算數․度量衡․兵仗 器․經書에 대한 지식․일반 상식등 초학자들이 학문에 임하는 자세와 독서 과정에 대한 안내서의 성격을 갖고 있다.
