This study tried to cover perception on Korea illustrated in the modern Japanese geography textbooks and compare them with the western documents. ‘Scene of Seoul’, ‘Koreans’, ‘Korean society’ and ‘Culture’ were set as the key subjects to have an overall grasp of Japanese image of Korea. Illustrations and contents in the western documents were also excerpted and compared with focus on the four subjects above. Japanese geography textbooks mostly compared Seoul before and after Japanese colonial ruling, similarities (appearance) and differences (national character) of Koreans and Japanese and men vs. women. In doing so, they tried focus more on dark sides of the Korean society and its backwardness. Illustrations of different periods were limited only to a few objects and discounted varieties. The western documents, on the other hand, covered various objects and even a single object was looked at in different ways to render various interpretations. Yet, illustrations did contain Oriental elements that recognized Korea as a pre-modern country from a modern perception.

이 글에서는 근대 일본 지리교과서의 한국관련 삽화와 내용을 통해 당시 일본의 한국에 대한 인식을 밝히고, 동시에 서양인이 기록한 견문록과 비교·고찰하였다. 한국에 대한 이미지를 파악할 수 있는 주제로 서울의 모습, 한국인, 사회상, 문화를 설정하였고, 견문록에서도 동일 주제의 삽화와 내용을 발췌하여 비교하였다. 그 결과 일본 지리교과서는 서울의 식민지 전후 변화모습, 한·일 양국민의 유사성(용모)과 상이점(국민성), 상류층과 하류층, 남성과 여성과 같이 이중구도 속에서 한국사회의 문제점과 낙후성을 강조하고 있었으며 관련 삽화도 동일한 대상이 중복되고 일부의 특정 대상에 국한되어 나타났다. 반면, 서양인의 견문록에서는 각 주제에 대해 제시되는 내용이 다양하며 그 대상들을 특정화시키지 않았다. 그러나 근대적 시각에서 한국을 전근대적 국가로 인식하는 오리엔탈리즘적 요소는 곳곳에 내재되어 있었다.
