The purpose of this study is to reconstitute sutra translation activity of Unheo (1922-1980). As there is Unheo in the midst of modern history of Korean Buddhism, there is sutra translation activity in the midst of Unheo's life. In order to achieve this goal, so-called ‘Unheo's desk diary’ is analyzed. In this data which wrote down his own activities for 20 years from 1959 without ever missing a day were recorded not only sutra translation work in public dimension such as establishing the Sutra Translation Center but also historical context of sutra translation work, people involved, affairs concerned and literatures related in detail. In this study the diary is divided roughly into two parts to be analyzed; the first part covers the period from January 1, 1959 to the time of establishment of the Sutra Translation Center and the latter part from July 21, 1964 though the end of 1968 which is the period of construction of the Center and afterwards. Through this study, following facts are found. Firstly, Unheo continued sutra translation activity without a day break. Secondly, Unheo aimed at establishing 'Dongguk Translation Center and sustaining the translation activity permanently on the institutional aspect through the public institute. Thirdly, he operated educational courses to train professional sutra translators. And, lastly, through the sutra translation activity mentioned above he endeavored to translate sutra mostly written in Chinese character into Korean(‘The Tripitaka Koreana’ is his representative work.), which laid cultural historical groundwork for making everyone enable to read and understand ‘Buddha's teaching’. In spite of results of this study, there is critical limitation that this study cannot so much as reveal his sutra translation activity fully to say nothing of his whole life. The reason why is that nothing remains but to show a part of data, even summarized, due to limited space. It is expected that further full-fledged study on Unheo is triggered by this study.

본 연구의 목적은 운허(1892∼1980)의 역경활동을 재구성해 보는데 있다. 한국불교 현 대사의 한 가운데 운허가 있듯이, 운허의 삶 한 가운데 역경활동이 있기 때문이다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 본 연구에서는 ‘운허의 탁상일기(卓上日記)를 분석하고 자 하였다. 1959년부터 20년간 하루도 빠짐없이 자신의 활동을 기록한 이 자료에는 역 경원의 설립과 관련된 공적 차원의 역경사업의 역사적 맥락뿐만 아니라 관련 인물, 관 련사건, 그리고 관련 문헌까지도 소상하게 적혀 있다. 본 연구에서는 탁상일기를 크게 두 부분으로 나누어 분석하였다. 첫 부분은 1959년 1월 1일부터 역경원 설립 이전시기 이고, 두 번째 부분은 1964년 7월 21일부터 1968년 말까지로 역경원의 설립과정 및 성 립 이후의 시기이다. 이 연구를 통하여 우리는 다음과 같은 사실을 발견하였다. 첫째, 운허는 거의 하루도 빠짐없이 역경활동을 지속하였다. 둘째, 운허는 동국역경원을 설립하여 역경사업을 공식기구를 통해 제도적 차원에서 영원히 이어가고자 하였다. 셋째, 역경인력(역경사) 을 양성하기 위한 교육과정을 운영하였다. 마지막으로, 이상의 역경활동을 통하여 거 의 대부분의 한문 경전을 한글화하여(‘한글 대장경’은 그 대표적 성과다) 누구나 부처 님의 말씀을 읽고 이해할 수 있는 문화사적 기반을 마련하였다. 이상과 같은 연구의 성과에도 불구하고 이 연구는 운허의 삶의 전모는 말할 것도 없고 그의 역경활동조차도 충분히 드러내지 못하였다는 결정적인 한계를 지니고 있다. 그 것은 지면의 제약 때문에 정리된 자료마저도 그 일부만을 공개할 수밖에 없기 때문이 다. 이 연구를 계기로 운허에 대한 본격적인 연구가 촉발되기를 기대해 본다.
