In our society, the understanding of national identity has been changing rapidly with a massive inflow of different subcultural groups. Following such a multicultural trend, it seems almost inevitable that the matter of Korean Unification would be affected. In this vein, the purpose of this paper is to suggest some ideas that the unification discourse has to handle in terms of intercultural perspectives. Compared with multiculturalism, the notion of interculturalism generally focuses on the value of integration among various subcultural groups in a multicultural society. On the ground of interculturalism, firstly the unification discourse in our society needs to deal with incorporation of new citizens as multiple agents in the process of Korean Unification. Secondly, it is crucial to provide a more universal grounding for the need for Korean Unification. Considering the change of the concept of national identity with the expansion of the multicultural society, it seems that the idea of building a unified nation state could not be the solid reason for unification. Lastly, it seems important that the unification discourse in our society has to stimulate for our citizens to connect Korean Unification with the integration of Korean Peninsular and Northeast Asia with a systematic insight.

다문화 사회는 우리에게 많은 물음을 던지고 있다. 남북한 통일문제는 그와 같은 물음과 관련 이 깊은 핵심적 영역 가운데 하나이다. 실제로 다문화 사회로의 변화는 남북한 통일의 주체, 통 일 필요성의 이유와 근거 뿐만 아니라 통일문제의 본질적 의미에 관한 진지한 고민과 성찰을 요구하고 있다. 이와 관련하여 본 연구는 다문화 사회로의 변화가 우리의 통일담론에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 것인가를 살펴보는 데 일차적 목적이 있다. 특히 다양성과 통합의 가치를 지향하 는 상호문화주의의 관점이 통일담론의 방향과 내용에 어떻게 작용할 수 있는가 하는 문제에 초 점을 맞추고 있다. 이를 위해 여기서는 남북한 통일을 어떻게 성취할 것인가 하는 문제가 통일 담론의 핵심이라고 보고 이와 관련하여 남북한 통일의 주체, 남북한 통일 필요성의 논거, 남북 한 통일과 사회통합의 관계 등을 검토하고 있다. 다문화 사회에서 남북한 통일은 더 이상 같은 민족 구성원들만의 문제가 될 수 없다. 그 보다는 인종적 문화적 하위집단과 그 구성원들 또한 남북한 통일과정에 동참할 수 있는 행위자의 일부 로 고려해야 한다. 그리고 다문화 사회로의 전환은 민족적 동질성에 기초한 통일담론의 재검토 를 요구하고 있다. 민족 중심의 폐쇄적이고 편협한 관점이 퇴조하는 대신에 남북한 통일문제를 새로운 지평에서 조망해야 할 필요성이 커지고 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 다문화 사회에서의 통일 담론은 남북한 통일문제의 본질이 과거로의 단순한 회귀나 민족의 재결합이 아니라 다문화 사 회의 요구를 적극적으로 반영하는, 다양한 집단과 구성원들의 통합의 실현에 있다는 점을 분명 히 해야 할 것이다.
