The purpose of this study is to examine some useful alternatives in the field ofboth social conflict and social integration. Many resolution alternatives for social conflict have long been focused on the social integration. Those approaches have beentested in a wide range of public sector fields, utilizing a variety of techniques andstrategies. Many researches for improving social integration have recently emerged infields in Korea dealing with conflicts of ideology, generation, gender, class, andregional development.
In line with these perspectives, identified by this study are the most importancealternatives for both social conflict and social integration: 1) integrative management ofexisting multiple resolution systems or programs for social conflict fields, 2)development of effective educational programs or publicity campaign to encouragesocial trust on inclusiveness and tolerance, 3) spread of trust culture based on therevitalization of mutual communication channel between the conservatives and theprogressive, between labor and capital, between the center and localities, amonggenerations, between men and women, and among major interest groups.

우리나라 사회는 갈등이 만연화되는 경향으로 인해 국정혼란과 국민의 불신이 극에 달함으로써 지금의 갈 등관리 시스템으로는 구조적인 갈등을 해결하는데 역부족이고, 이를담당해야 할 정부 또한 갈등조정 능력 이 미흡하다는 지적을 받고 있다. 이제 우리나라는사회갈등 해결 및 사회 대통합이라는 국가적․시대적 과 제를 풀지 않고서는 지속가능한발전을 이루어 나아가기가 어려운 매우 중요한 기로에 서있다. 즉, 국민이 행복한 선진국가를 건설하기 위해서는 반드시 사회구성원들을 결속하여 신뢰와 화해, 통합의 새로운장이 펼쳐질 수 있도록 모든 역량과 정책적 힘을 모아야 할 것이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 사회갈등과 사회통합에 관한 이론적 논의, 우리나라 사회가 겪고있는 사회갈등의 실 태를 크게 이념갈등, 세대갈등, 계층갈등, 지역갈등으로 구분하여 고찰하고자 한다. 더불어 사회갈등 해결 을 위한 갈등 조정자로서의 정부역할 재정립 및 관련 외국사례 분석, 그리고 사회통합을 위한 기반형성 방 안 등에 대하여 연구하고자 한다.
