In this article, it was investigated in the relationship with seasonal customs and lifetime ceremony to figure out in which form this Harai had been actually existing in Japanese folklore. As the conclusion of the analysis of this article, first, among the Japanese seasonal customs, there were considerably many rituals that were not ceremonies for agriculture but rituals to prevent calamity by casting out evil spirits. Second, among Japanese lifetime ceremonies, there are traditionally many age-celebration events for childhood, adulthood, late middle age and old age. These are also based on the concept of calamity prevention. Third, the fact that the ceremony of calamity year ‘Yakudosi’ had been conducted as an seasonal customs was brought into the attention. In other words, it implies that, in the content of Japanese seasonal customs, a characteristic related only to individual health but irrelevant to agriculture was absolutely existing. This fact may provides an important implication to reexamine the existing folkloristic concept which focuses on ‘rice farming agriculture’.

하라이(祓い)란 일본에서 부정을 없애는 정화의식 등으로 통용되는 일본어이다. 본 고에서는 하라이 의례가 일본민속에서 실제로 어떠한 형태로 존재하는지‘세시풍속과 ’일생의례’의 관계 속에서 파악하였다. 이러한 두 개념의 관계에 주목한 이유는 기존의 ‘도작(稻作)농경’ 중심의 민속학적 개념에 반론을 제시하기 위해서 이었다. 본고의 분석내용을 정리하면 첫째 일본 세시풍속에서는 농사를 위한 의례가 아니라 잡귀(雜鬼)를 퇴치하여 재액(災厄)을 방지하기 위한 의례가 상당히 많다. 둘째 일본의 일생의례에는 전통적으로 유아, 성년, 장년, 노년 등 연령축하 행사가 많다. 여기에도 재액예방과 건강기원 관념을 배경으로 하고 있다. 셋째 야쿠도시(厄年)의 의례가 세시풍속의 일환으로 행해지는 점에 주목하였다. 즉 일본의 세시풍속의 내용 속에는 농경과 무관하게 오로지 개인의 건강과 관계하는 성격이 분명히 존재한다는 것이다. 이 점이 기존의 ‘도작농경’ 중심의 민속학적 개념을 재검토하는 중요한 시사점이 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
