2009개정 사회과 및 도덕과 교육과정과 이 교육과정에 의해 개발된 초등 사회와 도덕 교과서의 내 용을 북한과 통일 관련 서술내용을 중심으로 분석하여 특징을 알아보고 개선에 대한 시사점을 제시하 는 것이 논문의 목적이다. 2009개정 사회과 및 도덕과 교육과정 문서를 분석한 결과 통일 및 북한 관 련 내용이 매우 적은 분량으로 구성되어있다. 내용 서술의 방향도 통일의 필요성과 미래상에 대한 내 용 중심이고 통일의 대상이 되는 북한에 대한 지식과 이해 및 함께 살아가야할 북한주민이나 북한이탈 주민에 대한 지식과 이해를 도모하는 학습내용은 절대적으로 부족한 것을 알 수 있었다. 사회과 3학년과 4학년 1학기 교과서는 지리영역중심으로 교육과정이 구성되어 한반도 지도가 여러 번 제시되는데 대부분 북한지역이 없는 남한만의 한반도 지도여서 북한의 존재에 대한 자연스러운 인 식 기회를 제공하지 못하고 있다. 도덕4 교과서에서 하나의 대단원으로 통일에 대한 필요성과 통일의 편익 등 전반적으로 통일에 대한 내용이 주가 되고 탈북학생과의 교우관계를 소재로 한 북한이탈주민 의 사회통합문제를 통일과 연결시켜 제시하고 있기는 하지만 통일의 대상인 북한과 북한주민에 대한 내용이 없다. 사회과와 도덕과 교육과정과 교과서에 공통되는 북한 및 통일 관련 내용의 특징은 ‘통일만 있고 북 한은 없다’는 것이다. 통일할 대상인 북한과 북한주민에 대한 이해를 돕는 학습내용은 거의 없고 통일 의 필요성과 편익 및 통일의지 제고를 위한 내용 중심의 불균형적인 구성으로 되어있다.
