The music festivals in Europe are based on the ancient Greek festival culture and the Christian religion. The holidays, in contrast to everyday life, are underlying the will to overcome the primal fear in form of playing and making music. On account of this, freedom and rigorous determination are equally designated. Although the organizers of the music festival changed from the aristocratic court over to the church and high school and eventually to the civil society, the founders and organizers remained unchanged, they were almost without exception the intellectuals. The most popular musical genres, which were represented at music festivals, are, chronologically speaking, Mystical Play, Passion Play, intermedio, opera, oratorio, male choir and orchestra music. Music festivals became more and more important over time to a culture of consumption. The source of modern music festival originates from the religious music (choir) of the 17th Century in England. At the beginning of the 19th Century a wide vocal movement was built by German-speaking patriotic minded men, who tried to overcome the Federal Napoleonic hegemony with the help of a vocal alliance and attempted to constitute an independent German country. The regional choirs united to a regional organization for singing, which served as an initiator and founder for the choral festivals. The numerous choral festivals prevailed at least 100 years, from the mid-19th Century to the end of the 2nd World War, in the whole society of the German-speaking choral movement and lead to a great social upheaval, victory against France, Constitution of the Empire assisted by the merging of German Nations, the first and second world war, etc. Richard Wagner also lived at that time and he succeeded to build a festival opera house, which served as a model for the development of numerous music festivals. Even after the 2nd World War new musical festivals originated in many European cities.
