This study is on the historical development of opéra comique, a genre of French opera that contains spoken dialogue and arias, to evolve as national opera of France, focusing on the works of librettists and composers. Opéra comique originated from vaudeville comedy of the Fair Theatres of St. Germain and St. Laurent in the early 18th century. At that time, the role of librettists were more important than that of the composers as vaudevilles comedy used already existing music for their comic play. From the middle of the 18th century, with the influence of Italian opera and J. J. Rousseau's (1752), composers started to compose original music instead of using existing tunes. This form of opéra comique was often known as comédie mêlée d'ariettes. With librettists, in close cooperation with composers, starting to treat diverse subjects comprising moral obligation, critic on upper class, interest in history, opéra comique as a comédie mêlée d'ariettes changed its comic nature to more serious nature opera incorporating turbulent political and social changes of France. Thus, opéra comique evolved into historical drama or lyric drama, expanding audience in both citizens and the novelty. For the study purpose, the relevant periods are divided into two - before Buffon Quarrel and between Buffon Quarrel and Revolution(1752-1789). The works of the prominent librettists- like Charles Simon Favart, Michel-Jean Sedaine, Jean-Francois Marmontel- and the composers - like Duni Egidio Romoaldo, Francois-Andre Danican Philidor, Monsigny Pierre-Alex-Andre- were studied to find out their cooperation and contribution for treating diverse subjects and experimenting different musical style, to establish opéra comique as national opera style of France.
