The Korean Anseong Hyangdangmu was the only traditional dance appointed as a group dance in Korea on August 21, 2000, which means overall dances succeeded in Anseong. With continual livelihood and creativity with a sense of craftsman in dance by Anseong people, more than 40 dances are inherited. For its distinctive variety and acrobatic skills which are not seen in another area, it has a sufficient value as cultural heritage descended to the next generation. Despite such significance in the history of dance, there is still lack of interests by the public and by the dancing circle alike on Anseong Hyangdangmu. Thus, it deserves study. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to examine distinctive features and unique locality with excellent artistic character by investigating Chaeseonghyang Dance, a dance that has high cultural value and expresses local characteristics and traditions of Anseong very well. For this purpose, research paper, books, degree thesis, academic articles and local resources were used to carry out the study on Chaeseonghyang Dance. While the originated period varies and types of dances are many, it is not easy to classify types and characteristics of Anseong Hyangdangmu, Chaeseonghyang Dance, a kind of Gibang kinds among Anseonghaengdangmu, has unique features as below. Firstly, it develops acrobatic skill. Secondly, it has names of dancing pattern. Thirdly, it has background of dance with local legend and myth. Fourthly, dance patterns are closely related to routine. Fifthly, it has many actions, has high level of difficulty and much fluctuation in beat. Sixthly, it is formed with new year greeting custom and background of Anseong folk. As such Anseong Hyangdangmu through Chaeseonghyang Dance has many distinctive features from other dances for its unique dance pattern, artistic character and distinctiveness. And it can be said as the dance with great locality and artistic achievement among traditional dances in Korea. Therefore, it is required to establish Chaeseonghyang Dance in terms of theory and spread it as performances so that proactive inheritance of tradition could be made.

안성향당무(安城薌堂舞)는 2000년 경기도 무형문화제 제34호 단체 종목으로 지정된 전통춤이다. 안성맞춤과 같은 장인정신이 춤 정신으로 이어져 끈질긴 춤의 생명력과 창조력을 발휘하여 40여종이 넘는 독창적인 춤을 전승하고 있으며, 다른 지방에서는 볼 수없는 다양성과 묘기적인 기법이 들어있는 안성고유의 춤들로서 후세에 물려주어야할 문화유산으로의 충분한 가치를 지니고 있다. 그러나 무용사적 가치가 큰 안성향당무는 아직까지 무용계의 인식이 부족하고 연구성과도 부족하며 더욱이 채선향춤에 관한 연구는 아직 한편도 없었다. 따라서 본 논문의 목적은 안성향당무에 전승되고 있는 춤 중에서 타지방에서 볼 수 없는 지역적 특성과 전통을 가장 잘 표현하고 있는 채선향춤의 전승내용과 독특한 춤사위와 용어를 고찰하고 향토적 특징을 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위하여 안성향당무에 관한 연구보고서, 전문도서, 학위논문, 학술논문, 향토자료 등을 통하여 채선향춤에 관한 연구를 진행하였다. 안성향당무의 춤 중 기방계열의 춤으로 분류할 수 있는 채선향춤은 다른 곳에서 찾아 볼 수 없는 다음과 같은 향토적 특징이 고찰되었다. 첫째, 특유한 춤사위 명칭이 있다. 둘째, 묘기적인 기법이 발달하였다. 셋째, 지역에서 전해오는 전설과 설화내용이 춤 형성의 배경으로 나타나 있다. 넷째, 춤사위들이 일상생활과 밀접한 관계가 있다. 다섯째, 동작수가 많고 난이도가 높고 강약의 굴곡이 심하다. 여섯째, 세시풍습과 안성민속적 배경을 중심으로 형성된 춤이다. 위와 같은 특징을 지닌 채선향춤은 다른 류의 춤들과는 다른 성향을 많이 지니고 있으며, 우리나라 전통 춤 가운데 향토성이 짙고 예술성이 높은 독창적인 춤이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 채선향춤의 보완해야 할 과제로는 이론적인 정립과 동시에 다양한 공연을 통해 이를 알릴 필요성이 있고 전승의 적극성과 함께 전통의 맥이 제대로 이어지도록 하여야 할 것이다.
