The 19-20th centuries when Yongshin Chae(1850∼1941) was active were like a milestone in Korean history as well as a time of rapid transformation. Korean art world in 1900s was experiencing grand changes caused by the acceptance of modern culture such as photography, and a traditional viewpoint toward paintings also began to change as a new trend from Western and Japanese Style of Art flew in. As Yongshin Chae who was also influenced by this new trend, it is worth thinking on various view point of Yongshin Chae's art and changes of Korean modern history through his own portraits. I studied Yongshin Chae's portrait style with three issues based on the reality among formativeness shown on his portrait. First, 'usage of Western painting style', second, 'using photography as the Western civilization', third, 'Relationship between hyper-fine penmanship which is Yongshin Chae's independent technique and hyper-realism of contemporary art'. Western painting style and photography accepted by Yongshin Chae's portrait laid the foundation to make his own style of painting. I investigated effectively using character of photograhy which highlights photograph's characteristics (accuracy, precision, and realism) to express itself of realistic reproducibility of the photograph on portrait. Portraits of Yongshin Chae made it possible to feel the sense of reality from the portrayed character by emphasizing visual reality simultaneously outgrowing from the previously customized method of reviving the spirit of the object. This signifies that with recognition of the changed circumstances in the midst of modernization, he continued self examination to develope his own style based on his own personality and talent, distinctive from other contemporaries. Ultimately, photograph to Yongshin Chae made him away from the conventional production method, made change himself as a tool and was a medium acting to form a modern perspective. Above all, it is signification that Yongshin Chae knew the value of photography effects and properly utilized it for realistic representations of figures, in the course of modern civilization according to the flow of the times.

채용신(1850∼1941)이 활동한 19〜20세기는 한국 근대사의 중요한 기점이자, 급변의 시기였다. 1900년 대 한국 화단은 사진술과 같은 신문물의 수용에 따른 변화가 일어나고, 서양화와 일본화의 새로운 경향 이 유입되면서 전통적 회화관도 변하기 시작했다. 이 같은 변화는 채용신의 화업에도 영향을 주었기에 같은 시기 제작된 그의 초상화를 통해 한국 근대사의 변화와 채용신의 예술세계는 여러 각도에서 생각 해 볼만 하다. 이 점에서 채용신 초상화에 나타난 조형성 중 리얼리티를 핵심 화두로 삼아 세 가지 시선 으로 그의 초상화풍을 살펴보았다. 첫째, 서양화법의 활용. 둘째, 서양문물로서의 사진의 활용. 셋째, 채 용신의 독자적 기법인 극세필법과 현대미술의 극사실주의와 관계성이다. 채용신이 초상화에 활용한 서양화법과 사진은 채용신만의 화풍을 구축하는데 실질적인 토대가 되었다. 이에 사진의 사실적 재현성이 초상화에서 그대로 표현될 수 있도록 사진의 특성(정확성, 정밀성, 사실성 )을 부각시키는 시각에서 사진을 효과적으로 활용한 특징을 살펴보았다. 채용신의 초상화는 재현의 의 미, 즉 닮음의 구현방식을 전신사조(傳神寫照)에 두었던 기존 초상화의 명제에서 벗어나 시각적 사실성 을 강조함으로써 초상화에 그려진 인물의 실재감을 느낄 수 있도록 했다. 이는 곧 근대화 과정 속에서 변모한 현실을 인식하며, 지속적인 자기탐구를 통해 동시대 화가들과는 다른 자신만의 개성과 재능을 살린 초상화풍을 형성했다는 뜻이다. 궁극적으로 채용신에게 사진은 그를 초상화의 전통적인 제작방식에서 벗어나, 스스로의 변화를 갖게 하 는 도구로서 역할을 하였으며, 근대적 시각을 형성할 수 있는 매체로 작용한 것을 알 수 있다. 무엇보다 시대적 흐름에 따라 근대문물을 수용하는 과정에서 사진효과의 가치를 알고, 사실적 인물표현에 적절하 게 활용한 것은 채용신 초상화풍의 근본이 되었다는 점에서 의미 있다.
