This paper studied change of traveling subject and its value, using as main materials Buk-yu-rok (a record of journey to north) and Baek-du-rok (a record to Mt. Baekdu), left by a writer Jintaek Shin Gwang-ha in the 18th century. In the introduction of this paper, I suggested that trip to Mt. Baekdu was a very rare case until the 18th century, that Shin Gwang-ha can be interpreted as a new type of man as a traveler in the century, and further that his trip to Mt. Baekdu can enlighten us true meaning of traveling. In the second chapter of this paper, I summarized political, social background of Shing Gwang-ha’s trip to Mt. Baekdu, appearance of a new type of man, and impression and memory of the then persons given by Shin Gwang-ha’s trip to Mt. Baekdu. The main points are that realizing ‘true play’ via traveling represented as trip to Mt. Baekdu, that national attention to northern territory was a social base supporting his traveling, and that an intellectual facing the border line of bureaucratic system could emerge as a new type of man. In the third chapter of this paper, I divided the change processes of traveling subject resulted from Shin Gwang-ha’s travel into the intellectual and emotional categories and examined them. For the examples generated from the intellectual category, I illuminated expansion of materials into the local topography and geography, specialties, and animals and plants, the informational description, the formation of political opinion through in-site survey, and the expansion of intellectual horizon. For the change generated from the emotional category, after reviewing changes in the form and contents of poetry (becoming long and narrative), I explained the special value of Shin Gwang-ha’s trip to Mt. Baekdu. The part where going to the ‘end’ of the northern border of Joseon Dynasty and climbing up to the ‘top’ of Mt. Baekdu, he went into ecstasy and fall into despair at the same time gave me a deep impression. This is that he shows us if we reach the apex of the ground, there is no place we can go further, by embodying it literally. Above all, he faced reality of extreme poverty in a town named Musan, where he visited first descending Mt. Baekdu. Thus, he experienced an ascensional trip reaching the peak of the ground and a descending trip towards the terrible bottom of the world at once. By leaving this polar opposite trip as poetry and prose, he testified the distance between the peak of the world and its bottom is never far. This can be his own feature that we can not find in the trips to Mt. Baekdu ever, and the unforgettable scene presenting metaphorically what is the true traveling.

본고는 18세기 문인 震澤 申光河가 남긴 ｢北遊錄｣과 ｢白頭錄｣을 주자료로 삼아 기행을 통한 여행 주체의 변화와 그것의 가치를 탐구한 것이다. 서론에서는 신광 하의 백두산 기행이 18세기까지 매우 희귀한 사례였다는 점, 여행가로서의 신광하 가 18세기의 새로운 인간형으로 해석될 수 있다는 점, 나아가 그의 백두산 기행이 여행의 진정한 의미를 일깨워줄 수 있음을 제기하였다. 본론 2장에서는 신광하의 백두산 기행을 둘러싼 정치사회적 배경과 새로운 인 간형의 출현, 신광하의 백두산 기행이 당시의 인물들에게 남긴 인상과 기억을 개 괄하였다. 여행을 통로로 삼은 ‘참된 노님’[眞遊]의 실현이 백두산 기행으로 나타 났다는 것, 북방 영토에 대한 국가적 관심이 신광하의 여행을 뒷받침하는 사회적 기반이었다는 것, 관료체제의 경계선에 처한 지식인이 기행을 통해 새로운 인간형 으로 떠오를 수 있었다는 것이 그 요지이다. 본론 3장에서는 신광하의 백두산 기행이 불러일으킨 여행 주체의 변화 과정을 지적인 범주와 감성적 범주로 나누어 살폈다. 지적 범주에서 생성된 변화의 예로 서는 현지의 지형과 지리, 풍토와 민속, 특산물과 동식물에 대한 素材의 확장과 정 보적 묘사, 현장 답사를 통한 정책적 견해의 형성과 지적 시야의 확충을 조명하였 다. 이어 감성적 범주에서 발생한 변화로서 시의 형식과 내용에 나타난 변화[장편 화, 서사화]를 검토한 다음, 신광하의 백두산 기행이 지닌 특별한 가치를 설명하였 다. 조선의 북쪽 국경 그 ‘끝’으로 가서 백두산의 절정 그 ‘끝’에 올라 무한한 희열 과 아득한 절망을 동시에 느끼는 대목은 매우 인상적이었다. 이는, 지상의 꼭짓점 에 도달하면 더 이상 한 발도 더 나아갈 곳이 없게 된다는 逆說을 그가 문학적으 로 형상화해서 보여준 것이다. 무엇보다 그는 백두산에서 하산하는 길에 들른 첫 번째 고을 茂山에서 극심한 기아에 처한 현실과 직면하였다. 그리하여 그는 예상치 않게 국토의 절정에 오르 는 상승의 여행과 세상의 처참한 밑바닥으로 향하는 하강의 여행을 한꺼번에 경 험하게 되었다. 그는 이 극과 극의 대조적 여행을 시문으로 남겨, 결과적으로는 세 상의 가장 높은 절정과 가장 낮은 바닥이 결코 멀지 않음을 증언하였다. 이는 역 대의 백두산 기행에서 찾을 수 없는 그만의 특색이자 진정한 여행이란 무엇인가 를 은유적으로 제시한 잊지 못할 장면이라고 할 만하다.
